We're so happy to share the news that Sojourner Truth State Park in Kingston, Ulster County, New York has received an Honor Award in Analysis and Planning from the 2024 @nationalasla Professional Awards. OLIN has had the excellent fortune of working with @scenichudson through a process of engagement and design, leading to the awarded Framework Plan as well as waterfront improvements at the State Park. The 520-acre park is on the Hudson, the site of a former extractive landscape that will transform to be a place for social and ecological revitalization—a model of resilience. It is aptly named for the 19th Century American abolitionist born into slavery in Ulster County and freeing herself to advocate for freedom, women's rights, and justice for the formerly enslaved. Landscape architecture firms Sasaki and OLIN are taking the lead to decarbonize their business and design practices. Sasaki recently moved their primary office from Watertown to downtown Boston, Massachusetts. “We purposefully chose a site with good transit access and no parking,” explained Tamar Warburg, the firm’s director of sustainability. Now, only 7 percent of staff commuting to the new office travel by car. OLIN, based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, created their own internal Climate Week as a learning exercise. They then started their own climate action plan to reduce emissions from their offices and projects, said Julie Donofrio, associate and co-coordinator of OLIN Labs. OLINites Rebecca Popowsky and Siyu Du are honored to have contributed to Representing Landscapes: Visualizing Climate Action, a stunning new book edited by Nadia Amoroso. Rebecca and Siyu's chapter "Drawing Out Climate Action: The Role of Graphic Representation in Climate-Centered Landscape Architectural Practice" delves into how visualization tools can synthesize information, communicate risks, and propose adaptive solutions. Representing Landscapes features visualizations of climate adaptation and resilience created by award-winning landscape architects and academics from North America to Europe, South Africa, and Asia. It is one of a series of impactful books on landscape representation that have significantly influenced both the professional and academic communities. We thank everyone who contributed their exceptional work to this effort. The visualizations from our OLIN projects, including the LA River Master Plan, Cano Martín Peña, Currie Park, Resilience Park, Infill Philly-Soak it Up, Origin Park, Pier 26, and Renovo Power Plant, were invaluable. OLIN is soaring with the news that UNESCO has just added the Brâncuși Ensemble of Târgu-Jiu to the World Heritage List. The Ensemble consists of the Table of Silence, the Gate of the Kiss, and the Endless Column arranged along an axis stretching from the floodplain of the Jiu River to commemorate soldiers who lost their lives defending Târgu-Jiu in WWI. OLIN participated in the restoration of the site in 2002-2004 to highlight the sculptural elements while subduing any intrusive adjacencies. The careful editing of the landscape context reveals the majestic and contemplative nature of the art and re-established the Ensemble as a world-class destination and a symbol of the heritage and vibrancy of Romania.
