Accelerating Chicago's community college students on career pathways to a degree and economic mobility.
About us
One Million Degrees empowers low-income, highly motivated community college students to succeed in school, in work, and in life. Community college students are among the most important yet least supported of this country's undergraduate population. Community colleges offer pathways to meaningful careers and, often, an on-ramp to four-year universities. Yet, lacking critical resources, most students never graduate. It is stunning how little is available to this vital and vibrant group of students. One Million Degrees changes the odds entirely. Our groundbreaking program – innovative, personalized, uniquely effective – delivers the kind of meaningful support that is transforming lives and creating a pattern of positive change that will echo for generations. This is what works.

Yesterday, Braven, City Year Chicago, and One Million Degrees co-hosted the “2024 Election Impact on America’s Youth” breakfast event held during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. We convened 40+ leaders across sectors to highlight the importance of civic engagement among young voters and to elevate their voices in the 2024 election. (Please note: These conversations do not reflect the opinions of our organizations or reflect any endorsement.) Special thank you to all who joined us as well as our speakers and panelists: Erick Deshaun Dorris (Midwest Executive Director at Young Invincibles, B Goode (City Year Alum), Emily Ibarra (Braven National Louis University Alum), Chakena D. Perry, Senior Policy Advocate, Environmental Health at Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Shanna Landheart (One Million Degrees Alum), and Aneesh Sohoni (CEO of One Million Degrees). Big thank you to Adrienne S. (Award winning Journalist) for moderating the two panels during this event. Finally, thank you to Morningstar, one of our incredible employer partners, for offering your space for this event. #BeBraven

As we face the ongoing challenge of underemployment, particularly among low-income students and students of color, the need to address occupational segregation and build career capital has never been more pressing. What role can early career experiences and social capital play in breaking this cycle? Vote for our #SXSWEDU panel “Disrupting Occupational Segregation, Building Career Capital” with Aneesh Sohoni, CEO of One Million Degrees; Aimée Eubanks Davis, Founder and CEO of Braven; and Jamal Watson, Executive Editor and Editor-at-Large at Diverse: Issues In Higher Education as they explore how social entrepreneurs, advocates, and educators can level the playing field for new graduates from underrepresented backgrounds and break down barriers to career and economic mobility: https://lnkd.in/geZF7Me9 Voting ends August 18!
