Our Child Advocacy Center Team held a quarterly retreat last week to encourage team building and help combat the effects of vicarious trauma. Vicarious trauma is a negative reaction to exposure to trauma that can occur through empathetic engagement with trauma survivors. Vicarious trauma can impact anyone who engages with trauma survivors, like our staff in the Child Advocacy Center. These retreats help ensure the team is well, psychologically safe, and resilient so they can continue to provide hope and healing to abused and neglected children in Onslow County. As part of their time together, the team volunteered at Onslow Community Outreach to help cook meals and support another community organization providing essential services to Onslow County.

Last week the One Place Child Advocacy Center hosted a meet and greet for Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) partners to help strengthen relationships and foster improved communication. Attendees included members of from various law enforcement organizations throughout the county and the Department of Social Services. “It was an exceptional way to meet other MDT partners." -Det. Wesley Hurley OCSO The goal of the MDT is to respond quickly to concerns of child abuse and determine the best response for the child and family. The collaboration with the CAC reduces the number of times a child has to speak about their abuse, helps families access services, and encourages safety and healing for victims and their families. “It is nice to meet everyone involved that helps the children in the county.” -Det. Johanna Harvey, OCSO.

Earlier this year we hosted An Evening for Hope, a private event to increase awareness about One Place Child Advocacy Center services and the importance of child mental health, and to share about our forever home, the SECU Hope Center. We are so grateful for the community individuals, organizations, and businesses who stand behind the work of One Place. Your support is vital to ensuring children and families in Onslow County are thriving. It takes a village to raise a child, but it takes a community to end child abuse. Last week our Early Childhood Programs team hosted professional development for teaching staff in Early Head Start, Three School, and NC Pre-K programs to prepare for the upcoming school year. Teachers participated in training opportunities focused on program curriculums including Creative Curriculum and Second Step. Our ongoing collaboration with Priorities ABA allowed for the opportunity to provide training related to Classroom Management and Environmental Modifications which support the variety of learning styles in preschool classrooms. Teachers also received training on the screening tools used to identify and support individual learning goals for enrolled children. Program requirements include the completion of developmental screenings for each child enrolled in Early Childhood Programs. It was a successful week and teachers and One Place staff are ready for the new school year to kick off today!

The current state of child care is challenging. According to a recent study released by the NC Chamber of Commerce Foundation, gaps in child care are driving parents out of the workforce, reducing tax revenue for the state, and placing incredible financial strains on North Carolina households, particularly among economically vulnerable families. At One Place, we want to learn more about the challenges facing families looking for child care that meets their needs. We also want to understand the implications of the child care challenge for local businesses. When employees don’t have reliable child care it can take a toll on a business, and ultimately, our local economy. We want to hear from you! If you’re a parent/caregiver who has experienced challenges related to child care availability, or a business that has been impacted by employee challenges with child care, please take five minutes to fill out our short survey and share your experiences. When we know more about the challenges in our own community we can work to solve the problem. https://lnkd.in/eX5_aPpm
