Over the past several years, the Energy Innovation Reform Project(EIRP) has developed and promoted an Innovation + Regulation Policy Framework (I+R) for decarbonizing the U.S. electric power sector. OnLocation, Inc. completed a comprehensive modeling analysis for EIRP to identify the potential benefits and challenges of employing the I+R Framework. The study found that the I+R Framework is more cost-effective and results in greater diversity of generation options, including more firm and dispatchable clean power, than the alternative regulation-only clean energy policy examined. While some technological breakthroughs, such as small modular reactors and molten salt reactors, are making the planning of future nuclear power plants increasingly enticing, new nuclear reactors notoriously take years to build and even longer to get funded, approved, and permitted. The largest U.S. facility for pulling carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere began operation on Tuesday in a sparsely populated pocket of northern Oklahoma. Transportation-related CO2 emissions account for about 37 percent of all energy-related CO2 emissions in the U.S., with emissions coming from the combustion of petroleum products. Use of alternative-fuel vehicles (AFVs) and biofuel blends can reduce CO2 emissions as well as local air pollutants that contribute to smog and health impacts.
