The month of May was a blur of activities at the Veterans Service Agency. Whether we were there working or as guests, there was always something to share with our Veteran and Military community. On Thursday, students from the Institute of Technology at Syracuse Central placed 93 flags in honor and remembrance of the Onondaga County Veterans who died during the Vietnam War; three of them being graduates of the Institute of Technology. A huge thank you to these students for keeping the memory of our Veterans alive. #Veterans #MemorialDay2024 #community

Today in front of City Hall, Mayor Ben Walsh proclaimed the City of Syracuse a Purple Heart City and launched Syracuse Hometown Heroes. The VSA was honored to witness this important event along with other local Veteran Service Organizations. Thank you City of Syracuse. Let's go Onondaga County. Who will be the next Purple Heart City! 💜 Banners for Syracuse Hometown Heroes can be purchased from SyracuseHometownHeroes.com, from now until June 20, 2024. For 2024 only 399 banners will be displayed, so act fast. The Syracuse Hometown Heroes program was created in partnership with the Syracuse Parks Conservancy, who will administer it, and the Dunbar American Legion Post #1642 from Syracuse. Last week our Director, Anne-Marie Mancilla participated in a panel to discuss how the VA and community partners can better collaborate to support Veterans and their families, caregivers, and survivors. The VetResources Community Network (VRCN) Northeast Regional Partner Convening took place at the Syracuse University National Veterans Resource Center (NVRC). During the enlightening panel discussions, areas were identified as requiring further attention and collective effort. A couple of focal points for improvement were homelessness and mental health awareness. It is of utmost importance that the VA, State and Local Veteran Agencies, and our invaluable local community partners work hand in hand to address these pressing issues and create a comprehensive support system for our honorable Veterans. The distinguished panelists on the State and Local VA Services panel included Zaneta Adams - Deputy Assistant Secretary, Intergovernmental Affairs at VA, David Richmond - Director of the Maine Bureau of Veterans' Services, our very own Anne-Marie Mancilla - Director of Onondaga County Veterans Service Agency, and Kasim Yarn - Director of Veterans Services, Rhode Island. #veterans #veterancommunity #veteranshelpingveterans
