Hurricane Francine, a Category 1 storm, is barreling towards Louisiana, threatening coastal communities with life-threatening storm surge and hurricane-force winds. Further development is not anticipated as Francine nears the Louisiana Coast due to increasing wind shear and the potential for dry air entrainment. Post-landfall, Francine is expected to weaken quickly and lose its tropical characteristics. The National Hurricane Center has issued a storm surge warning for much of the state's coast. The storm surge warning extends from western Louisiana to the Alabama-Mississippi border, encompassing Lake Maurepas and Lake Pontchartrain. Coastal areas from Vermilion-Cameron parish to Mobile Bay can expect significant water levels, with the potential for up to 10 feet of surge in certain locations. Low-lying areas, including bayous and marshes, face the risk of severe flooding. The strongest surge is expected east of the storm's center, with potential inundation exceeding 5 feet in some areas. Communities like Cocodrie, Port Fourchon, and Grand Isle are particularly vulnerable. Francine will be the seventh hurricane to make landfall in Louisiana since 2017. Wildfires in the US are surging, with 2024 already exceeding the 10-year average in burned acreage. This alarming trend is putting immense pressure on the insurance industry. The National Interagency Fire Center reports a 10-year average of 5.9 million acres burned annually. While 2023 saw a lower figure of 2.69 million, 2024 has already surpassed 5.2 million acres as of August 15th. California is particularly affected, with 2024's burned acreage 29 times higher than 2023's total. This escalating crisis challenges insurers with increased claims, unpredictable losses, rising reinsurance costs, and coverage complexities. Innovative risk management and stakeholder collaboration are essential for mitigation. Exposure management tools from Opterrix offer a solution. Our risk intelligence platform strengthens insurers' resilience to natural disasters such as wildfires, protect policyholders, and proactively navigate the risks posed by a changing climate. Historic rainfall and flash floods are devastating parts of the Northeast, with Connecticut facing the brunt of the damage. Torrential rains over the weekend caused widespread flash flooding, leading to more than 40 rescues and forced evacuations in western Connecticut alone. The tri-state area experienced submerged roads and cars, prompting water rescues across Long Island and Connecticut. Some areas in Connecticut and Suffolk County, NY, even saw a staggering 1,000-year rainfall event. Flash flood emergencies were declared in parts of Long Island, causing multiple water rescues. Suffolk County has also declared a state of emergency. Connecticut's Governor Ned Lamont declared a state of emergency due to extensive structural damage to roadways, with over two dozen roads closed for an extended period. Hurricane #Ernesto, the third hurricane of this Atlantic hurricane season, made landfall early Wednesday morning, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Ernesto's path is reminiscent of Hurricane Lee from 2023, which also intensified rapidly and impacted the same region. The storm's center has moved into open water, but its impacts continue to be felt on the islands. Widespread power outages and flash floods are causing significant disruptions, with over a million customers in Puerto Rico alone without electricity. Ernesto is currently moving northwest and is expected to turn north and then northeast, gaining strength as it heads toward Bermuda. Model forecasts suggest it could become a large and powerful hurricane by Thursday or Friday. Bermuda is bracing for potential impacts, including heavy rain, flooding, and a significant storm surge. While Ernesto will stay well away from the U.S. mainland, its impact will be felt along the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast coast in the form of large waves and dangerous rip currents Don't leave your hurricane response to chance. Tropical Depression Debby, despite being downgraded, poses a serious flood threat as it moves north. Though winds have lessened, heavy rains and potential tornadoes, especially in North Carolina and Virginia, persist. Debby's second landfall in South Carolina has tragically caused at least seven deaths across three states. As of late Thursday, the storm was moving north-northwest, bringing heavy rain concentrated north and west of its center. Widespread flooding in North Carolina has closed roads and submerged homes. Heavy rain and potential tornadoes are expected in Virginia. In Georgia, flooding has necessitated water rescues and threatens a local dam. While Debby's remnants may offer some relief to the drought-stricken Northeast, the heavy rain poses a major flood threat. The storm's track through Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and upstate New York could lead to flash floods and disruptions due to expected rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches, with the potential for isolated areas to receive up to a foot. ------ Don't leave your hurricane response to chance. A 5.2-magnitude earthquake rattled Southern California last night, sending tremors from Lamont to Los Angeles. The epicenter, located 15 miles southwest of Lamont and 25 miles south of Bakersfield, triggered a series of aftershocks, the largest measuring 4.5. Despite the widespread shaking, there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimated a low likelihood of casualties or damage, but the event serves as a reminder of the ongoing seismic activity in the region and the importance of earthquake preparedness. #Earthquake #Insurance #Insurtech

Tropical Storm Debby is bringing prolonged downpours and flooding to the Southeastern U.S. after making landfall in Florida as a Category 1 hurricane. The storm has already caused record-setting rain and claimed five lives. Debby is expected to move offshore of Georgia later today and then inland over South Carolina on Thursday. National Hurricane Center forecasters warn of a "major flood threat" with potentially historic rainfall totals of 10 to 20 inches in some areas. This could lead to catastrophic flooding in parts of Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Flash flood warnings have been issued for Savannah, Georgia, and Charleston, South Carolina, among other areas. Both cities have announced curfews. In South Carolina, Charleston County Interim Emergency Director Ben Webster called Debby a "historic and potentially unprecedented event." Don't leave your hurricane response to chance. Hurricane Debby made landfall near Steinhatchee, FL at 7 am ET as a Category 1 Hurricane with max sustained winds of 80 mph. As of 11 am ET, the National Hurricane Center has downgraded Debby to a Tropical Storm as it continues to decelerate over northern Florida. Forecast guidance suggests that Debby will slowly turn to the east and produce record rainfall over parts of the Georgia and South Carolina coastline. 48-hour rainfall forecasts are indicating over 10 inches of rain through tomorrow with even more rainfall possible into Wednesday and Thursday. Some areas could see as much as 20 inches of localized accumulations. “This is a once-in-a-thousand-year potential rainfall event,” Savannah City Manager Jay Melder said at a press conference this morning. Residents of Savannah are encouraged to leave work early and stay in their homes. Forecasters will keep a close eye on Debby as potential restrengthening over warm Atlantic waters could further increase rainfall amounts. Debby is expected to slowly move out of the region later this week. Don't leave your hurricane response to chance.
