Nonlinear optics has undergone a drastic evolution, with ultrafast nonlinear nanophotonics emerging as a frontier for combining spatial and temporal engineering. The mesoscopic regime, where a few hundred photons induce highly nonlinear dynamics, presents a unique challenge at the intersection of classical and quantum optics. NTT RESEARCH Physics and Informatics Lab scientists are working to rethink quantum engineering as a whole, with an optics-based reboot. Research from seven PHI Lab scientists, published in Optica, addresses the need to develop a deeper understanding of the physics that characterize nonlinear optics in the mesoscopic regime and explores new opportunities involving quantum measurements, quantum computing, wave phenomena and more. Global-scale quantum networking faces significant technical and scientific obstacles. How can we overcome these challenges? An IRIS Adlershof research team demonstrates a protocol that improves long-distance entanglement distribution with reduced system complexity over previous proposals. The protocol, described in #OPG_OpticaQ, uses a satellite with two quantum memories that effectively acts as a time-delayed version of a single QR node. The team’s method significantly reduces system complexity while achieving high key rates, bringing global quantum networking closer to implementation. Written by: Mustafa Gündoǧan, Jasminder S. Last week, I had the chance to attend BGPP (Bragg Gratings, Photosensitivity and Poling in Optical Materials and Waveguides) conference from Optica, in Quebec City, Canada. A big thank you to Matthieu Lancry and Martin Bernier for organizing such a great event! I presented my research on "Point-by-Point Femtosecond Fiber Bragg Gratings Behavior at High Temperatures" and am pleased to announce that I received the Best Student Award, sponsored by Sensuron. It was a fantastic opportunity to share my work, connect with other professionals in the field, and catch up with my colleagues. I’m thankful for the recognition and looking forward to incorporating the new ideas and feedback into my future projects. #BGPP2024 #Optica #FiberBraggGratings #Research #Awards #QuebecCity #Sensuron #StudentAchievement
