Listen to the Story of "Brave Little Hunter"

MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW!📌🐋👉 Jared Towers: "Bigg’s Killer Whales of the Pacific NW: Supporting and Identifying this orca population." Tuesday, September 24, 2024 7:00 PM 8:30 PM Register Now: https://lnkd.in/g3zP-G8x In March of this year, Vancouver Island residents were gripped with the story of kʷiisaḥiʔis, or “Brave Little Hunter,” who had been stuck in the Zeballos (BC) lagoon since her pregnant mother was stranded and drowned. Join us to hear the story of coaxing this calf into the open ocean by a scientist involved, techniques used, and overall what scientists are learning of this population of Orcas using latest technology and leveraging AI deep learning algorithms. This free event is open to the public. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. A suggested donation of $10 per participant is encouraged and greatly appreciated. Donations help cover webinar costs and support our education and cetacean research grant programs. To donate, please visit our website https://lnkd.in/e6gsf8z. We are grateful for your support! Jared Towers, Executive Director of Bay Cetology, Vancouver, BC: Jared’s work primarily revolves around studying the movements, behavior, abundance, and ecology of cetacean populations using direct observations and remote sensing technology. He typically spends over 100 days a year at sea conducting field research on killer whales in both hemispheres, but has also been involved in studies on minke, humpback, fin, sei, blue, grey, right and sperm whales in the North Pacific, South Atlantic, Indian, and Southern Oceans. Jared manages several killer whale population datasets, helps advise and direct a number of cetacean research and conservation organizations in North America, has published several scientific articles, and in addition to conducting conservation based field research also responds to cetacean incidents such as entanglements, entrapments, and strandings.

J pod made a few calls on the Orcasound Lab hydrophone this morning in Haro Strait as three vessels accidentally formed a northbound convoy. Could we someday organize vessel traffic to reduce their aggregate #underwater #noise #pollution in this way -- not just by slowing down or moving further away from the endangered Southern Resident killer whales? Listen to the recording here and read more analysis here -- https://lnkd.in/g_cm7Rgb

Big oil companies are harming our ocean while making enormous profits. Shell alone has just announced £billlions in profit over the last three months. WDC has joined the Ocean Alliance Against Offshore Drilling to put an end to the destruction of UK seas and work towards a quick transition to renewable energy. This will not only help protect whales and dolphins, but the living planet we all depend on. #EndOffshoreDrilling #DrillingIsKilling

Dear My Team Members at Orcasound, I‘m honored to announce my Art Show, “Whale Sounds on a Canvas,” on Thursday, May 23, at 5 p.m. in Petaluma (North Bay) This art show is inspired by my fascination with whales and their unique communication, songs, and sounds, which began in childhood while learning from Captain Jacques Cousteau. As a marketing professional, my passion for art drives my creative process in solving complex marketing campaigns and constructing forward-thinking marketing strategies. However, I never thought that I could use my acrylic paintings and abstract digital art pieces as a tool to help Whales. I’m so lucky to have the chance to help a couple of whale conservancy non-profits in differing capacities as a Board Member, Mentor, or Project Manager. This unique opportunity has elevated my love for them to another level and inspired me to express it creatively. After two years of working on their sound patterns and waves by hand drawings, I slowly migrated them to digital platforms and created abstract expressions using various digital technologies. However, I Did Not Use AI technologies during my creative process. I’m so happy to be able to help protect the whales in another way: A portion of the sales will be contributed to ORCASOUND.net Please join me on this special day to celebrate these majestic creatures and help save them. Looking forward to seeing you there! Thursday, May 23, 2024, 5 pm Keller Street CoWork 140 Keller Street Petaluma 94952 This is event is open to the Public and FREE

Happy Earth Day! Here's a new #salishsea dashboard that mashes up open orca and salmon data the same way Southern Resident Killer Whales mash up Chinook #salmon from the Fraser and Columbia rivers. https://lnkd.in/gHYxZsZK Congrats to volunteer @liuzoe for winning the *2023 Best Visualization of Ecosytem Data* across all projects of the Orcasound open source community!
