Working to end hunger and its root causes... because no one should be hungry.

About us

Oregon Food Bank's mission is to eliminate hunger and its root causes ... because no one should be hungry. We believe that hunger starves the human spirit and that communities thrive when people are nourished. We work with a cooperative, statewide network of partner agencies to distribute emergency food to hungry families, helping 740,000 people who experience hunger every year. We fight hunger's root causes through public policy advocacy, nutrition and garden education to help people become more self-sufficient and resourceful, and by bringing communities together to strengthen local and regional food systems. Join our movement to end hunger. Become an Employee: You can make a difference daily, no matter what your strengths and interests are. As an employee you'll see first-hand the great need in our community and your work will have a direct impact in the lives of our neighbors experiencing hunger. Volunteer: We need your help! Our volunteers come together from all walks of life to do meaningful work and have fun doing it. Volunteers are critical to our mission. You repackage food donations, lead nutrition education classes, maintain our Learning Gardens, help out in our offices, lend a hand at events, and more! Advocate: Help us put the power of food to work. Through the concerted efforts of people like you, we can ensure that Oregon legislators get the message: providing food to those in need is a priority today, and addressing hunger's root causes is vital to eliminating hunger tomorrow. Donate: You have the power to make a difference for a neighbor in need. A gift of as little as $10 will feed a family of four for three to five days. Give Food: Food solves hunger today, by filling plates with nutritious meals. Whether it's a can of vegetables from your pantry, your donation is distributed through our network of hunger-relief agencies to the tables of hungry families in Oregon and Clark County, Washington.

“Stewarding this land with my family has been the greatest opportunity I’ve ever experienced,” Mia says. “Being able to raise our children knowing that they will learn how to tend and trust the earth, changes everything for me as a mother. It’s been such a leap into liberation to call this collectively Black owned land, our home and sanctuary – we are creating a powerful shift in what feeding our futures looks like.” Black Oregon Land Trust (BOLT) builds community power, making land access possible for Black farmers by securing and retaining affordable farmland and helping them establish their farms. Support BOLT to help farmers like Mia secure and preserve farmland for themselves and future generations: BlackOregonLandTrust.org.

Today is Women’s Equality Day! Evelyn Estrada Guzman, Oregon Food Bank Statewide Organizing Manager, shares through her Reproductive Justice lens: “Coming from working in Reproductive Justice I know that access to receiving care is difficult and that holding different identities exacerbates the gap in receiving care. Oftentimes receiving care is put aside to meet other basic needs but we know that no one should have to choose on what need to fulfill. People shouldn't have to go hungry or have to go without receiving care. Our communities deserve to thrive and not be kept from accessing what they need because of unjust systems.” Learn more about the intersection of hunger and gender justice at https://lnkd.in/ggVY6aTY.

Carriese is a program coordinator for Black Oregon Land Trust (BOLT), and stewards the community garden and Mother Residency, a program that provides community, agricultural learning, and fresh food to BIPOC mothers with young children. 🌱 “I get to bring my celebration, my grief, and everything in between to the land. When we slow down to build the health of the soil and get to see the food we’re planting begin to thrive, it feels like a metaphor for life. We’re feeding people, but we’re also feeding relationships – with each other, and the earth.” —Carriese 🌱 This month is known as Black August; honor the legacy of Black freedom fighters in our country who have worked to resist systemic oppression and create thriving futures for all by supporting BOLT today ▶️ BlackOregonLandTrust.org.

We are celebrating the news that 70% of Oregon schools will offer free breakfasts and lunches to all students during the upcoming school year! “Everyone’s food budgets are high right now, and this helps all families,” Matt Newell-Ching, Policy manager for the Oregon Food Bank, said. “Instead of putting in means tests about who needs it, this is a recognition that food costs are high for everyone.” Read more at The Oregonian / OregonLive.com.

Food insecurity disproportionately affects specific communities in Oregon, regardless of geography. Historic inequities and systemic exclusions mean that Black, Indigenous and Communities of Color, immigrants and refugees, single moms and caregivers, and trans and gender expansive communities are two to three times more likely to face hunger and poverty in our region. By addressing these disparities we can ensure everyone in our state has access to the essential resources we need to thrive. Get involved today: https://lnkd.in/gBrMVx5P.

Grateful to have the chance to spend yesterday morning and evening at #FredMeyer with a few of our favorite folks from KPTV Fox 12 Oregon to promote the Round Up Campaign! It’s easy to make a difference: Grab your groceries then round up at the register at your local Fred Meyer. Your extra cents add up and go to local meal sites in your community 💚 I love being able to promote this partnership and the way we all can work towards collective good!
