There it is, finally. I've been eagerly awaiting the moment to hold this gem in my hands for over half a year: Manuel Matuzović's brand new Web #Accessibility Cookbook. Not so much because I was excited about the content — I had the incredible honour of being asked by Manuel to be one of the reviewers, so I already knew what to expect — but because I wanted to finally be able to start enthusiastically recommending the #book to anyone who wants to get involved with accessibility. What's so good about this book? Unlike most other works, it does not revolve around specific technologies, but rather describes the many facets of accessibility in a task-orientated way: What tools and techniques do I use to structure documents and entire websites? How do I link documents to each other or ensure consistent focus behaviour? How do I display and hide content accessibly and how do I ensure that forms are understandable and easy to use? This extremely practical approach makes the book THE go-to resource for me from now on, which I will strongly recommend in all my training courses and lectures. Flicking through the first few pages of the book feels like browsing through the annual report of your own school class. I find countless names of dear friends and valued colleagues. And I have to admit, it makes me very proud to have made a tiny contribution — although the big applause undoubtedly goes to Manuel. I will forever associate Manuel's writing with the fact that I was sitting in the sunshine in a ski hut on the Zugspitze, reading the review version, when I received the news that our office credit card had been misused. It's fantasy football 🏈 draft season, when I usually post about using fantasy data to learn data science and AI techniques. This year I am writing a book 📕 about it! I use fantasy sports data in side projects for a simple reason: I’m a fantasy junkie and it’s what I know best. As it happens, it also has a lot of rich data to model, munge, and manipulate. In my book "Hands-On APIs for AI & Data Science", you work at SportsWorldCentral, a fantasy sports website. The book walks you through performing user research, building APIs for your data-hungry users, and then creating AI apps and analytics products with them. I had a blast interviewing a few fellow fantasy junkies like Kyle Borgognoni, Editor-in-Chief of The Fantasy Footballers, and Joey G., creator of the Leeger fantasy stats library. I also learned a lot from sports analytics folks like Francisco Goitia, Richard Erickson, Eric Eager, and Amelia Probst for the resources they shared and/or advice and feedback they've given. I ❤️ NYC, cycling, and data visualization. Here's an example of what happens if I combine the three. In Chapter 1 of our O'Reilly book Python Polars: The Definitive Guide, there'll be a complete showcase that demonstrates how to transform, analyze, and visualize Citibike data. Besides Polars, we use Plotnine for data visualization and a custom Polars plugin for performing some geographical operations. We're getting close to having a first draft of all the chapters. Thijs Nieuwdorp and I can't wait to show you what we've been working on the past year!
