Putting the power of seed into the hands of growers

About us

Organic Seed Alliance puts the power of seed into the hands of growers. Our work promotes an abundant and diverse supply of organic seed, tended in perpetuity by skilled, diverse, and interconnected communities of seed stewards. We envision a world in which seed grows an equitable, abundant, and resilient future of food. About us: Organic Seed Alliance is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that puts the power of seed into the hands of growers. Our work ensures an abundant and diverse supply of ecologically grown seed, tended in perpetuity by skilled and diverse communities of seed stewards. To advance this mission, we serve growers working with seed across the US at any scale through participatory research, practical education, policy advocacy, and network development. We prioritize partnerships with organizations and individuals aligned with our values, and we convene spaces where divergent viewpoints can be expressed and explored. In all our work, we ally ourselves with and embrace opportunities to amplify movements for community sovereignty, racial equity, and social justice. OSA’s programs are woven of technical expertise, rigorous methods, practical experience, and deep reverence for seed work. We are in awe of the processes of life, and root our organizational systems in the wisdom of ecology. We continually seek input from growers working with seed, ensuring that we are directed by, and accountable to, the people we serve. Each year, OSA educates thousands of farmers and other agricultural community members through on-farm and online events and resources. Our research program involves organic plant breeding and seed production research, and our advocacy efforts focus on policies that strengthen organic seed systems. Our most recent State of Organic Seed report (2022) is part of an ongoing project to monitor the status of organic seed nationally and provides OSA has a twenty-year track record as the leading organic seed institution in the US.

More than 15 years ago, Organic Seed Alliance held an onion field day in Northern California, which Jacques Neukom of Neukom Family Farm attended. Since then, Jacques and his partner Amy have grown a robust seed-saving practice, including the preservation of their Sweet Summer onion seeds. Jacques recently shared these photos from Neukom Family Farm in Willow Creek, CA, reflecting on the impact of that field day: "Our community is still benefiting from it." Known locally for their peaches and diverse produce, the farm employs organic, dry-farming methods and cultivates an impressive array of biodiversity. The final photo showcases eight varieties of seed-saved melons, fourteen varieties of seed-saved tomatoes, and onions just beyond view. We love hearing from farmers who continue to build on the knowledge shared at our field days and other events. How has seed-saving benefited your community?

OSA’s Washington team had a sweet time with the incredible Bonnetta Adeeb recently, during her visit to the Pacific Northwest. Our time together included visits to several local food system participants: Chimacum Grainery, Wild Dreams Farm, Washington State University’s Breadlab, Viva Farms, Eldur Heron Farm, Pure Nelida Farm, and Kawamoto-Wipala Farm. Bonnetta is the founder and president of Steam Onward, a non-profit organization based in Southern Maryland. Steam Onward’s programs include the Ujamaa Cooperative Farming Alliance (UCFA) and Ujamaa Seeds, among others. UCFA works to increase diversity in the US seed industry, guided by the principle of “Ujamaa,” or cooperative economics. The name "Ujamaa" comes from the Swahili language and is also the fourth principle of Kwanzaa. UCFA works to connect historically oppressed and marginalized seed growing communities with opportunities, support, and access to seed companies. We are honored to be collaborating with Bonnetta as she serves on the planning committee for OSA’s upcoming Organic Seed Growers Conference. We cherish Mrs. Bonnetta’s commitment to justice by any means necessary and the wisdom she holds and shares as an elder and a lifelong educator. We encourage you to learn more about her work with Ujamaa! https://ujamaafarms.com/

OSA had the pleasure of attending the recent International Carrot Conference held in Raleigh, North Carolina. Micaela Colley, OSA’s Research and Education Co-Director, presented a study comparing the performance of carrots under conventional and organic conditions. 🥕 The conference also included a Carrot Cultivar Demonstration trial and an Alternaria trial. Maybe you’re thinking, what is Alternaria? Alternaria is a fungal plant pathogen that causes carrot leaves and stalks to wither and fall off, and it can be spread via spores on carrot seeds. With the fields in North Carolina facing significant Alternaria pressure, in part due to the region’s humid summer heat, this trial was highly effective in testing resilience. Several promising carrot populations stood out, and Purdue University MS student Kayla Quintero collected roots for microbial analysis as part of her master’s thesis research on plant-soil interactions and Alternaria resistance. The conference, hosted by NC State’s Massimo Iorizzo, also highlighted the work of researchers and geneticists exploring nutritional value as it relates to different vibrant colors of carrots. We appreciate the opportunity to continually improve organic agriculture through this kind of collaborative research. Thank you to everyone who has been involved in the Carrot Improvement for Organic Agriculture project over the years, and who made this event a success! 🔗 41st International Carrot Conference https://lnkd.in/eGkFQKV4 #OrganicFarming #Carrots #CIOA #SCRI #OREI
