We love to showcase our Orvis Endorsed Partners and Tikchik Narrows Lodge in Bristol Bay, Alaska, is no exception. On his final day at Alaska’s TIKCHIK NARROWS LODGE, INC., Orvis' own Philip Monahan ventured onto the lakes with guide William Paul, aiming to hook a big char and some northern pike. Positioned in the narrows near the lodge, a cool breeze swept down from Nuyakuk Lake. Overnight, the temperature had dropped noticeably, and the fish appeared reluctant to chase their flies far. Despite the challenging conditions, Phil managed to land a few small char and lake trout. Suddenly, Will exclaimed, “Bear!” and pointed across the shore opposite the lodge. A young, lanky brown bear fixed its gaze on the pair momentarily before returning to nibble on lichens. During this pre-salmon and pre-berry season, the bears, truly omnivorous, seek any available calories. After observing Phil and Will for about five minutes, the bear lost interest and wandered off into the willows. With the coast clear, they resumed the fishing adventure! Bureau of Land Management Decision Will Prevent Proposed Ambler Road in Alaska’s Brooks Range In late June, the Bureau of Land Management issued its Record of Decision halting plans for the Ambler Industrial Road in Alaska’s Brooks Range. Jen Leahy, Alaska senior program manager for the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, praised the decision: "Today’s outcome is a win for local residents, Alaska Native Tribes, and over 14,000 conservation-minded hunters and anglers nationwide who advocated for preserving the enduring wild character of the Brooks Range. We commend the BLM for prioritizing these public lands for hunters and anglers, and for grounding this crucial decision in sound science and extensive public involvement." This decision follows the BLM's final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement released on April 19, which endorsed the "No Action" alternative, signaling the agency's intent to block the proposed industrial corridor.
