Meet Katherine "Katie" Smith, a dedicated member of the OSF HealthCare family for nearly 18 years. Currently serving as the coordinator of Innovation Labs at OSF Innovation. Katie’s journey began in 2006 as a laboratory assistant and then a lead medical scientist before transitioning to a community health worker. In her current role, Katie combines her clinical expertise with a love for teaching, using the OSF STEAM program to inspire the next generation of health care professionals. Despite the tragic loss of her only son last August, Katie found solace and purpose in her work, where she continues to make a difference in the lives of children and the broader community. Katie’s commitment to the OSF HealthCare Mission is deeply rooted in her belief in meeting patients and their families where they are while treating everyone with care, love and understanding. Whether it’s ensuring patient safety in the lab, breaking down barriers as a community health worker or addressing social drivers of health at OSF Innovation, Katie approaches her work with empathy and dedication. A lifelong learner, she holds multiple degrees and certifications, including a master’s in health advocacy and a patient advocate certification. Outside of work, Katie lives on a bicentennial generational farm, where she and her husband, Jason, recently celebrated 20 years of marriage. Her story is one of resilience, compassion and an unwavering commitment to serving others with the greatest care and love.
