We are excited to launch our second piece of NEXUS LGBTQ+ thought leadership in partnership with Out Leadership entitled "The LGBTQ+ Employee Lifecycle: What’s Missing?"  This paper is a followup to our breakfast event on this topic earlier in the year at the 2024 Out Leadership Europe Summit. It's intended to help our LGBTQ+ ERG leaders and other champions to have strategic conversations with your HR/DEI teams, executive sponsors and business leaders to identify more opportunities to achieve better outcomes for your LGBTQ+ workforce. From highlighting LGBTQ+ DEI best practices and progress, identifying where further LGBTQ+ data and insights are needed, looking at lessons from other diversity strands, to considering the potential impact of AI, the paper calls out gaps in activity and areas where more support across the employee lifecycle can be provided to help retain the LGBTQ+ workforce. We have also included some practical actions that you can take now to drive progress!  You can find the paper here: https://lnkd.in/ejYtbz4Y Please share this with your LGBTQ+ ERG members and other colleagues who may find this useful. For more information on how to get involved with NEXUS LGBTQ+, the network for LGBTQ+ ERG leaders, sponsors and chairs in London, please visit: https://lnkd.in/dJgBUEqz A huge thank you to Daniel Ricard, founder and chair of NEXUS LGBTQ+, for always being a great collaborator. Vice President Kamala Harris is now the presumptive Democratic nominee for President. But her record on LGBTQ+ rights didn't just fall out of a coconut tree. Here is some of the context of all in which she lived and what came before: As a district attorney, she established a hate crimes unit to protect LGBTQ+ youth and coordinated prosecutors into a nationwide pushback against the so-called "gay panic" defense. As Attorney General, Harris refused to defend California's Proposition 8, which reversed the legalization of same-sex marriage in the state. Her refusal to defend the provision directly contributed to its eventual demise at the Supreme Court in Hollingsworth v. Perry, where the Court ruled the petitioners had not suffered a "concrete and particularized injury" as a result of gay marriages and therefore had no standing to defend the ballot initiative. After Proposition 8 was definitively struck down, Harris personally ordered county clerks to begin issuing marriage licenses. As a United States Senator, she spearheaded a bill that would eventually mandate insurance coverage for PrEP, the HIV-prevention method. #LGBTQ #VP #KamalaHarris #VPHarris #KamalaIsBrat

You think money falls out of coconut trees? 🥥🌴 The Context: Democrats hit a jaw-dropping fundraising milestone, on track to collect $100 million in donations since President Joe Biden announced he would not seek a second term in office. The total far eclipses the $52 million raised by former President Trump after his felony conviction. Kamala Harris boasts a strong record on LGBTQ+ rights. As Attorney General of California she refused to defend Proposition 8, the constitutional amendment that halted same-sex marriage in the state just months after they first began. As of 2pm ET, Act Blue data show Democrats have raised $98.2 million. #KamalaHarris #VP #Biden #Harris2024 #coconuttree

The United Kingdom's new leadership has committed to banning the dangerous and medically-repudiated practice of conversion therapy, according to the priorities outlined at the State Opening of Parliament. The previous Conservative government also claimed it would ban the harmful practice, but failed to do so as it was embroiled in debate over issues of gender identity. Under Conservative leadership, the National Health Service began offering conflicting assessments regarding LGBTQ+ healthcare. For instance, the NHS banned the use of puberty blockers in trans children while continuing to recommend the medication for cisgender children experiencing precocious puberty. #conversiontherapy #UnitedKingdom #UK #UKLabour #trans #transrights

Nigerian civil society ignited after the government signed the $150 billion Samoa Agreement on June 28th over allegations the treaty would require the West African nation to soften its stance on LGBTQ+ rights. Anti-LGBTQ+ hardlines accused the government of devaluing the moral character of the country to obtain foreign loans. The Nigerian government, after extensive review, assured critics that the Agreement does not violate any current laws or constitutional provisions in Nigeria. The recent fervor over the law has encouraged newfound hostility toward the LGBTQ+ community in Nigeria, where homosexuality is punishable by life in prison. Out Leadership's Country CEO Business Briefs ensure that employees who do business in-country are aware of the laws and other regulations that impact LGBTQ+ people and that they've adopted the appropriate internal policies for their location. They equip business leaders and policymakers with a clear sense of the most impactful steps countries can take to make themselves more hospitable to forward-thinking, innovative, inclusive businesses. As the GOP attempts to strike a unifying tone at the Republican National Convention following last week's assassination attempt against former President Donald J. Trump, Republicans tap a Peter Thiel-backed, far-right political newcomer to join the Presidential ticket. Sen. JD Vance opposes the Respect for Marriage Act, which aims to protect the right of marriage equality in the United States. He also is a staunch opponent of abortion and gender-affirming care. #JDVance #VP #GOP #RNC #LGBTQ

For me, Pride is not just a time to celebrate, but it’s a time a reflect—I’ve often said it’s like New Year’s for the LGBTQ+ community. What’s happened in the last year, and what do we need to do in the year to come. And this Pride I’ve been reflecting a lot on one of my mentors, the incomparable Larry Kramer, and what he’d say to me about the world today. I only knew Larry for the last ten years of his life, but in that short time, I learned so much from him. You’d think that given how different our styles of activism are (he favored “die-ins” in the #nyc streets and covering Jesse Helm’s entire house with an inflatable condom, and I try to get CEOs and companies to use economic power to drive change), that we wouldn’t see eye to eye on much. But instead, he helped me understand that creating social change requires activists of all stripes and approaches, from loud protestors on the outside to strategic advocates on the inside. And to prove it, he agreed to speak at my @outleadership #OutNEXT emerging leader conference (the LAST place you’d assume to find Larry Kramer was on an investment bank’s stage surrounded by 220 young corporate leaders). And I’ll be forever grateful that he agreed, because those next gen #LGBTQ leaders got to hear from a Legend. I asked my buddy Kate Kendall to interview him, and the one question I asked her to ask him was, “Does it bother you that the vast majority of these young leaders may not know who you are and what you did for them?” And Larry had the most poignant (and Larry-like) answer. He said, “Todd, we fought for our health and our community so that they could just live their lives. The greatest gift that our generation can give to them is to not pass along our trauma, and to absorb it for them.” Larry died just ten months later. Our community owes leaders like Larry (and Urvashi Vaid, Sylvia Rivera, Marsha P. Johnson, and countless others who are no longer with us) an enormous debt of gratitude for the world we now inhabit. And what would Larry say to me today? “Stop wasting time writing social media posts, you’ve got work to do!” I can literally hear him. And as usual, he’s right. #Pride #moreworktodo Out Leadership
