Pair of Thieves

Would you rather be stuck in a forest with a man or a bear? This question set media ablaze with thought-provoking commentary and controversy. It all stemmed from TiKTok account Screenshot HQ asking women on the street this question. In the video, the preference for being stuck in a forest with a bear wins out handily. This lopsided count is followed by an avalanche of comments on the post, most of which seem to echo that preference. Some of the over 80,000 comments responding to the post touch on issues of violence against women, patriarchal injustices, and general toxic masculinity. Many in the comments and in the media pointed to the rise of influencers who propagate ideas of misogyny and toxic male behavior as a fuel source for the fears. As a brand who speaks to men and is represented by a bear, we thought we should let the bear have his say. Working with LA based creative agency, DANG we created a series of video content pieces aimed at combating some of the toxic masculine tropes of the moment. We wanted to share easy means for men to show up in the world in healthy and positive ways. Rather than try to collide head-on with the alpha-male, manosphere movement, our approach was to commandeer the vehicle. We took its loud, ultra-aggressive posturing and shoved it in a poorly ventilated bear costume to ultra-aggressively promote ideas of empathy, solidarity, and mindfulness. The results are video vignettes we hope serve as a reminder that men can be a force for good in the world. Given the choice between an encounter with a six-hundred-pound grizzly and decent guy, hopefully the scoreboard can start to even out. Check out the videos on our Instagram: @pairofthieves
