Last week, L&I Secretary Nancy A. Walker and Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn visited members of the Pennsylvania Outdoor Corps at Codorus State Park in York County. The PA Outdoor Corps provides youth and young adults with paid work experience, job training, and conservation education to help them excel in their future careers. Governor Josh Shapiro’s 2024-25 budget includes a $5 million investment in the Outdoor Corps, with operational support funded by L&I. #PaOutdoorCorps

About us
The Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry employs more than 5,000 workers in 200 offices statewide. Established in 1913, the department originally inspected the working conditions in factories around the state. Over time, the department's responsibilities expanded. L&I administers benefits to unemployed individuals, oversees the administration of workers' compensation benefits to individuals with job related injuries, and provides vocational rehabilitation to individuals with disabilities. The department prepares job seekers for the global workforce through employment and job training services for adult, youth, older workers, and dislocated workers. In addition, L&I enforces various laws and safety standards in the workplace and administers the commonwealth's programs for community service by young Pennsylvanians. L&I also promotes economic development and an improved business climate through a variety of initiatives and programs to help Pennsylvania's workforce remain world-class and globally competitive.

DYK: So many diverse skill sets are needed to run a farm? School District of Philadelphia students are working on Fox Chase Farm and gaining hands-on experience in everything from feeding animals, keeping up with maintenance, to even marketing the farm on social media. With the help of L&I’s Schools-to-Work grant program, the Shapiro Administration is proud to support the district in launching students directly into family-sustaining careers, especially in the agriculture industry.

L&I’s MY Work program is giving about 1,000 Pennsylvania students with disabilities a hands-on work experience in their own community while earning a paycheck. This summer, L&I has partnered with more than 150 municipalities and nonprofits across the state. Earlier this week, L&I Secretary Nancy A. Walker joined Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding at Fox Chase Farm in northeast Philadelphia, a working educational livestock farm recently awarded $250,000 through L&I’s Schools-to-Work program for their Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) Pre-Apprenticeship Pipeline Program. The program will prepare students in the School District of Philadelphia for indoor farming careers and reinforce the district’s commitment to fighting food insecurity in the community. Under Governor Shapiro’s leadership, L&I and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture are working together to create more registered apprenticeship opportunities and training programs to support the Commonwealth’s growing agriculture industry.
