You will make mistakes - we all do - but how you recover from mistakes leaves either a positive or a negative mark on your brand. The first step to coming back from a mistake is being honest with yourself. Own up to the fact that you made a mistake or caused a negative outcome, whether intentionally or unintentionally. From there, you can be open and transparent with others, showing you can take accountability and learn from your mistakes. A double bind is a communication dilemma where someone receives multiple conflicting messages. One message negates the other, and responding to one message could mean failing with the other. For example, when asked to delegate an assignment, the employee might expect their leader to hold them accountable for the outcomes or deadlines, but if they delegate instead of doing the task themselves, the task may not get done, and the assignment goes adrift. This can leave the recipient feeling anxious and perplexed, and indicates that, as a leader, you are not communicating effectively. Often, when a team is not meeting expectations, leaders are quick to get frustrated and place blame on their staff. However, it's important to look in the mirror before you start pointing fingers... Ask yourself this question: Is the behavior isolated to one individual, or is it a pervasive problem? If it's the latter, it's more likely that the issue stems from how the team is being led. It could be as simple as a miscommunication or it could be an indicator that a cultural shift is needed. Either way, it's important to identify the root cause of the problem so it can be addressed appropriately. While Slack and Teams are great communication tools for remote teams, misusing this communication medium can do more harm than good. It's easy for miscommunications to happen due to a lack of verbal cues. In some cases, team morale, engagement, and productivity could be damaged if you're using the wrong channel of communication. Here are some messaging faux pas for leaders to avoid: ❌ Negative Feedback - Feedback should be delivered privately and ideally face-to-face or over a video call to allow for a more constructive, empathetic conversation and to avoid misunderstandings. ❌ Urgent Issues - Opt for a phone call instead. Messages can be easily missed or not seen immediately. ❌ Collaboration - Complex discussions or brainstorming sessions are better suited for meetings or collaborative documents where ideas can be fully explored and documented. ❌ Sarcasm or Jokes - Leaders substitute sarcasm, which can be easily misinterpreted in text form and can harm team morale, with clear and direct communication. Jokes should be used cautiously and consider both the professional environment and the impression you wish to convey about your brand.
