  • Charity Rose, Full-Service Community Schools Coordinator at Jackson County High School in Kentucky, understands the needs of the youth in her community because it's her community too. Through her work, Rose is able to bring programs and activities to the high school that appeal to the diverse interests of the student body, including everything from college and career events to health fairs and demonstrations from blacksmiths and artists. "Being in the school, I can see what the needs are, and I can bring in programs and resources to meet those needs," Rose said. "Not just for my own kids, but for all the students." I am thrilled that Devon Sinkovic from Waterford.org’s community engagement department was able to join this amazing collective conversation with other education professionals from Diboll Independent School District and WEST SABINE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT, serving as another thought partner and contributor. We look forward to continued conversations and opportunities to collaborate in East Texas to make a greater impact on our children, families, and communities.” Thanks to one of our national partners, Partners for Rural Impact, and the East Texas C2C Partnership for creating a wonderful space for learning, strategy, collaboration, intention, and endless possibilities. We do it better when we do it together!

Last week, the East Texas Cradle to Career Partnership brought together more than 60 education professionals in Lufkin, Texas, to address a growing problem: student absenteeism. There are many reasons why students would be chronically absent, but absenteeism in all forms can impede learning and create significant barriers in a child's future. Educators from Diboll and West Sabine ISDs gathered to tackle this problem with the understanding that working together is the most effective way to build targeted, local solutions. Honored to be a voice representing rural communities today at the White House for the National Economic Council’s Summit on Capital Support for Place Based Economic Development! It was great to be joined by these incredible leaders working to increase upward mobility for all young people. Great to also hear powerful data and passion from Jerry Neal Kenney at the TLL Temple Foundation about how few dollars from private philanthropy flow into rural communities.
