PAWS Chicago is the city's largest humane organization, implementing solutions to end the killing of homeless animals.

About us

PAWS Chicago is a national model in No Kill animal sheltering, committed to bringing an end to the killing of homeless cats and dogs. As Chicagoland’s largest No Kill shelter and one of the largest in the nation, PAWS has helped to reduce the number of homeless pets killed in the city by over 91 percent since its founding in 1997. PAWS Chicago has grown from a grassroots organization to a national leader in the No Kill movement, guiding other communities in how to dramatically reduce the euthanasia of homeless cats and dogs. In 2020, PAWS Chicago found homes for 4,100 dogs and cats through its Lincoln Park and Highland Park Adoption Centers and performed almost 10,000 spay and neuter surgeries through its Lurie Clinic and GusMobile Spay/Neuter Van. These two medical resources give PAWS Chicago the ability to provide subsidized spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, and humane education to under-served families and neighborhoods that need the most help in controlling pet population. Charity Navigator, the nation’s largest independent evaluator, has rated PAWS Chicago at its highest 4-star ranking for 18 consecutive years—an accomplishment that less than 1% of the charities in the nation have reached. Our annual Beach Party is this Thursday, July 25, and we’ll be honoring two special community members for their commitment to raising awareness and bringing the community together for homeless pets and our No Kill mission! Candace Jordan is an award-winning media personality, associate publisher of Chicago Star Media, Crain's Chicago Business columnist, and founder of CandidCandace.com. After attending the first PAWS Chicago Fur Ball in 2002, Candace has become a regular at PAWS events and has served on multiple event committees. She joined the PAWS Development Board in 2008 where she helps raise critical funds for homeless dogs and cats. As a part of the PAWS Chicago community, Candace is a vocal advocate for our No Kill mission, saying, “I love that PAWS never gives up on the pets they take in.” Candace is also a proud dog mom, having adopted PAWS alum Penny the Pencil Neck this past year. Bill Jacobs owns and operates one of Chicago’s favorite pizza joints— Piece Pizzeria & Brewery in Wicker Park. In addition to baking New Haven pizza and brewing delicious craft beer, Bill has made giving back to the community an integral part of his restaurant. In 2008, Piece hosted a PAWS fundraiser called “Rock Star Delivery,” where Cheap Trick’s Rick Nielsen made a pizza delivery to the highest bidder on eBay. In 2014, they hosted “Halloween Xmas Carol Karaoke for PAWS at Piece,” which ran for several years. And in 2023, Piece launched “Slice to Meet You,” an annual, three-month-long campaign that sells specialty pies to benefit homeless pets and distributes adoption flyers on pizza boxes to help give homeless dogs and cats their second chance at life. “Homeless and at-risk pets are a societal issue. It is our obligation to care for these beautiful animals and give them a chance,” says Bill.  Please join us in celebrating these devoted animal lovers at this year’s Beach Party! Tickets are available at pawschicago.org/beachparty
