It's International Literacy Day! 📚 Today we're highlighting the impactful efforts happening in Jamaica's Bethabara Primary School. With the support of Peace Corps' Virtual Service Pilot Participants, students are gaining confidence as they improve their reading skills, one word at a time. What started as a few virtual lessons has grown into a community effort, with parents, teachers, and Virtual Service Participants working together to nurture a love of learning. Today, we honor the strength and spirit of Eswatini as the country celebrates its Independence Day. 🙌 As we reflect on the rich history of the country, we're incredibly thankful for our more than 45-year partnership with the Eswatini people and for welcoming our newest Peace Corps Volunteers to date. An Unlikely Friendship 💚 Sometimes, the most unexpected friendships can have the greatest impact. Jian, a 70-year-old Peace Corps Response Volunteer, left her home and young grandchildren to serve in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, where she met Fabian—a young boy whose world had been shaped by the eruption of the La Soufrière volcano. In the midst of recovery and resilience, they forged a bond that led them to create something special. We're zooming into Deaf Awareness Month by connecting Deaf students virtually! Recently, Peace Corps Volunteer Alana brought together students from the Indiana School for the Deaf and a school in Ghana for a virtual cultural exchange. With seamless interpretation between American Sign Language and Ghanaian Sign Language, the students discovered the deep similarities that connect them. The impact? U.S. students learned about Ghana and were excited by the opportunity to serve with the Peace Corps, while Ghanaian students learned more about the U.S. and its Deaf community. It’s these kinds of exchanges that prove how powerful it is when separate worlds meet—bridging difference and fostering understanding.
