Meow - Well, I guess the cat is out of the bag (and where did that saying even come from?)…. … For more than 5 years I’ve watched and admired a team called The Vanlife App nurture and grow a great community and following in a space near and dear to my heart. A few years back the team raised some venture money and rebranded as Sekr. I continued to follow them and cheered them from the sidelines as what they were building was super cool and much needed….an app for making road trips better and for fostering community and connections for those traveling in vans… … Over this past summer I noticed the app had gone dormant and I tried, to no avail, to reach the leadership team to see what was up or if, perhaps, I could even help. Fast forward to November of 2023 and the opportunity presented itself to purchase the assets of the company as it was going away and the servers and such were being tuned off. I had to move super fast but it was something I was extremely passionate and excited about so I was extended myself in myriad ways to make it happen. Just before the new year we signed the PSA and Peace Vans took over the assets of Sekr…. … One the best parts so far has been bringing my dear friend Jordan Schwartz into the fold. For years Jordan and I would meet at least once a month and discuss our businesses, life, children, burning man and more amidst the unique ambience that is Al’s Tavern in Wallingford. The night after it was clear I was going to close the deal, Jordan and I were already scheduled for drinks. I showed up and said “I got one word for you - Sekr” and I showed him the app. Jordan, being Jordan, immediately grokked the potential and it took only two drinks (stiff manhattans) to convince him to be the Chief Product Officer…. Since that night it’s been “off to the races”. We have a great dev team iterating on bug fixes, updates and some super cool new features. I’ve pivoted some Peace Vans resources to help. Jordan and I spent a week in Baja at one of the largest van gatherings in North America chatting with folks and going deep with customers. To say its been fun so far is an understatement. But it’s also a shit ton of work to be honest. The app hasn’t been touched in 16 months and it’s been a beast to update it …. I’ve always joked that one of the challenges with scaling Peace Vans is that you can’t just provision more servers in the cloud….well…now we can :) ….
