The People's Music School

Last week, we welcomed 14 new teaching artists to The People's Music School! 🎼 Our newest faculty are skilled musicians and educators who come from all over - Chicago, California, Colombia, Venezuela, and beyond. Our Learning & Teaching and HR teams led the group through new faculty orientation, centered around TPMS's community values and curriculum guidelines. Many thanks to Natalie Butler, Megan Robbins Felipe Tobar, Kasia Johnson and Jessica Esteves for your hard work and for providing such a warm welcome! 🎶

Congratulations to Alejandra Aquino on her promotion to Program Associate at The People's Music School! 🎉 Today, she led the first part of our back-to-school SLAM Family Meeting with the perfect balance of warmth and fun. I’m excited to see her continued growth as she steps into this new role and further explores her unique leadership style. A special thanks to my fabulous colleague, Grecia Landin, for her equal role in advocating for Alejandra's success. Fostering a healthy employee focus is a key pillar at The People's Music School. As a leader, I’ve had the privilege of coaching in various styles. In cases like Alejandra’s, I often transition from a direct supervisor to more of an advocate and cheerleader, especially after witnessing her excellent performance this year. I’m excited to see how Alejandra continues to thrive and contribute to our mission. Here's to many more successes ahead! 🙌

Our annual end-of-summer staff meeting brought the whole team together to reflect on where we've been and gear up for our exciting school year ahead. It was complete with a potluck lunch, percussion lesson, and roof deck happy hour! Many thanks to TPMS faculty Joel Block for leading our staff in an engaging percussion lesson and helping us become paradiddle pros 🥁 💪

Happy Birthday, Rita! Today, we celebrate and honor our late founder, Dr. Rita Simó. Rita founded The People’s Music School in 1976, wanting to bring the free music education she received as a child in the Dominican Republic to students in Chicago. Her extraordinary contributions as a musician, educator, and change-maker continue to resonate in Chicago and beyond.
