🔊 It’s official — we are looking for new members! We are building an infrastructure that scales up current efforts to advance democratic innovation, and your organisation could be a perfect match. In the conference “Elections on Rewind: Democracy on Fast Forward,” organised by the European Partnership for Democracy (EPD), we presented our membership programme, which aims to build an agile hub of democratic innovators. The announcement was followed by a panel on citizen participation with insights from the European institutions and Nets4Dem member organisations, such as Democratic Society’s Anthony Zacharzewski, Demos Helsinki's Sahib Singh and Democracy Reporting International’s Paul Zoubkov. We need to move toward healthy ecosystems of democracy. But changing centuries-old political and cultural practices is never easy, and we should not expect an overnight transformation of democracy. It has taken 5,000 years of democratic innovations to get us to where we are. But if we shift from promoting waves to building ecosystems, we can accelerate transitions to new practices of democracy. 🖐🏽 Here are five unhealthy habits that are getting in the way of this transition and five strategies for growing healthier democratic ecosystems. 1. Solutionism: One single solution can solve all of our problems.  2. Conflation: Democracy means my approach to democracy. 3. Rigidity: My democratic practice must follow a specific formula - anything else is wrong. 4. Abstraction: I am pro-democracy, whatever that means. 5. Division: My democracy work is fundamentally different and separate from yours. 🐟 Our adventure in the fishing industry continues. Our colleagues Katya Petrikevich and Anna Wien traveled from the sunny Seychelles to Madagascar 🇲🇬 with the same goal of helping a local multi-stakeholder group co-create recommendations for the national government regarding enhancing participation in fisheries transparency. Despite a problematic journey, which took 2 days instead of 12 hours, they made it to Antananarivo perfectly on time for the in-person workshop. 💡The core of the two-day workshop in Madagascar was built on the work in small groups. During the first day participants managed to discuss a shared vision for the state of fisheries in Madagascar, the role of participation in it, and then review already pre-designed recommendations and further expand their list. After that, they worked on detailing priority recommendations. 🎯 The second day of workshops participants further worked on the recommendations and identified existing institutions and policies that can be leveraged to achieve the vision and implement recommendations. To wrap things up, participants also looked at how all the recommendations interconnect and help create a firm foundation for achieving a vision they created. 🙌 The first day of workshops was even attended by the Minister of Fisheries and Blue Economy himself. During his visit he has presented a current progress of actions regarding improvement of transparency in fisheries in Madagascar. Afterwards, we have presented to him the objectives of the project and the workshop and explained the next steps. The Minister confirmed his cooperation in ensuring these recommendations are implemented and invited us to present the outcome of workshops during a personal meeting on our last day at Antananarivo. 👉 We are glad that both workshops were successful, participants were engaged in the topic, and came up with lot of interesting suggestions. Next time, we will discuss how we made a first step towards the implementation of recommendations from Seychelles and Madagascar workshops by presenting them to the local national governments and conducting in-person training for their representatives. ➡️ This participation activity is a part of a larger pilot project with Fisheries Transparency Initiative (FiTI) and People Powered on participation in fisheries transparency in the Seychelles and Madagascar. The workshop culminates the 2nd phase of the project, where the first one focused on mapping the status quo with the local multi-stakeholder group through a series of interviews and a survey, which were conducted in the past few months. #participation #participationfactory
