  • Are the best teams the most successful? Are they teams full of superstars? Why don’t the most talented teams always win? “The best football team’s I’ve been on are not the most talented. They’ve been they closest” - (James Jones, 2023) It’s not always about wins and losses. Though this is how we measure success and what we term as “best”, you may not have the best team for you individual members if you don’t understand what their values and goals are. #whoisthebest #knowyourperformers #personalizeperformanceplans

  • When you hear sport psychology, do you think of tangible skills or the vague invisible mantras? Want an example of what we do in action? Look at Rudy Gobert’s free throws in the 4th quarter of game Game 4. Look for the routine that he takes after missing the first one. This is a tangible application of the skills and techniques we teach.

Instead of worrying about teaching others what we know, we need to first create an environment where anyone would want to listen to what we have to say. Curiosity and trust (and even motivation, in particular ways) are cultural. People learn whether it's okay to *not* know or if they have to pay a social penalty. Knowledge can be found anywhere. Genuine care and support cannot be.

I often receive questions about the differences between mental health and mental performance professionals and how to include both within a sport system. Within the Mind Health network - quick shout out to our network, THANK YOU!! you all are amazing - we have mental performance consultants, licensed mental health providers & psychiatrists and we created the resource (accessible via the link below) to provide a general overview of the unique and complementary services that can be provided by these professionals: https://lnkd.in/gkBwE7Zb The information included here is not exhaustive and we recognize that individual professionals may be able to provide additional services based on their specific training and expertise. However, the general, take home message is that mental health and mental performance professionals can add value individually & collectively by offering services at the individual, team and organizational level. One additional point: Creating a mental health & performance team that includes mental performance consultants, licensed mental health providers, and psychiatrists is similar, respectively, to having strength & conditioning coaches, athletic trainers & physical therapists, and medical doctors as part of an interdisciplinary team to address physical health & performance. They all have different training and different areas of expertise, but they also work together to create a system of support for teams & organizations. #MindHealth #MentalHealth #MentalPerformance #SportPsychology #InterdisciplinaryTeam

  • When people say mental health is normalized because it’s talked about so much now…this is what they miss. It doesn’t matter if there’s a bunch of chatter if there’s no change. It doesn’t matter how much we talk, if we’re not teaching. Even in another one of my job’s just earlier this year the comment “we’d all be labeled crazy” was thrown out jokingly by a boss when I brought up a serious concern based upon things I personally had seen and heard then processed with my education and experience. The barriers to seeking help for mental health issues are still real and deeply stuck in. For every positive we see there are hundreds more like this. The “real world” involves legitimate mental health concerns. The “real world” is learning the importance of mental health breaks. The “real world” is in drastic need of a shift for how business is done. #mentalhealthmatters #mentalhealthawareness #sportpsychology #mentalperformance #performancepsychology #needachange

Athletic Mental Health and Wellness Counselor (Pre-Licensed)

There's just no place for this in sports. Reading through this article and the conversation had with his head coach was incredibly disheartening. No reason that football programs with so much fame and financial resources can't have adequate mental health resources and services for student athletes. "We didn't know the signs/symptoms" or "We didn't know how to make a referral" simply isn't enough anymore. Furthermore, no coach should feel so comfortable invalidating the feelings, emotions, or mental health concerns their athlete has. When this young man was courageous enough to advocate for himself, asking for the support, compassion and understanding he needed from his "boss", he received none. With all that student athletes give to these programs, we have to be better when it comes to handling them with care. Human first, athlete after. https://lnkd.in/emW2dUGe

  • This is so important! There is so much that can be done with sports…but what happens when the athlete doesn’t perceive those promises as being fulfilled?

As fall sports get going, we're going to hear a lot about the promises of sport. That any athlete who participates will develop resilience, confidence, and life skills that can stand the test of time. While sport can be the stage for this type of development, without intentionality we can fall short. If we're going to fulfill the promises of sport then we have to initiate and invite conversations about power, culture, and humanity. I look forward to continued collaboration with everyone who wants to make these promises true for all.

  • While this is a great achievement, let’s also understand the intangibles that it takes to get here. Mental toughness, confidence, a strong support system, goals, determination and motivation, and maturity. Coco has proven throughout her short career that she’s not just a special talent…but a unique individual with a high level of mental skills as well. Don’t just watch how she plays, but look at how she carries herself. Between points, games, and sets. When things aren’t going her way. When they are going her way. She’s special. https://lnkd.in/dGv35i-W

1% of your day is about 15 minutes... So here’s a suggestion. Spend 1% of your day thinking about your game...and then get away from your sport. Why? Because sports competitors with ambition tend to over-think their game. They tend to worry and doubt. The tend to create anxiety-inducing internal images. They tend to rehearse mistakes and failure. They tend to ruminate on what they have to do to impress and what they’ve got to achieve to remain in the team or in the tournament. They can tend to over-think! So here’s a potential solution. Spend 1% of your day...approximately 15 minutes...enjoying thinking and picturing and reflecting on your game. Build skills in your mind. Rehearse the mindset you want to have in training and match day. Run through scenarios. Mentally contrast successful and unsuccessful plays. And then, when you’ve done your 15 minutes, commit to avoiding thinking about your sport. Mentally relax… You’ve done your job...you don’t need anymore. You’ve mentally rehearsed what you’ve needed to…you’ve reinforced what’s required. Enough! Shift your attention away from your game, shift your attention away from your sport. Whether it’s because the brain can’t tell the difference between what’s real and what’s imagined...or whether because summoning up great inner pictures emblazons a great blueprint on your mind...1% time can be enormously impactful. But it’s also, very probably, enough!
