Water utilities depend on 300,000 skilled, dedicated professionals to ensure that people and waterways have access to clean, healthy, plentiful water to thrive. However, with an expected wave of retirements, the majority of these jobs will need to be filled over the next decade. In March, Pisces Foundation partners at the US Water Alliance released a report highlighting strategies for water utilities to transform their workforces. These strategies serve to develop the next generation of water professionals while also building an equitable water workforce that supports vibrant economies in all communities. US cities could be capturing billions of gallons of stormwater each day, according to a recent report from Pisces Foundation partners at Pacific Institute and 2NDNATURE. Highlighted in WIRED, this research shows how investing in stormwater capture can increase water supplies while also reducing flooding and preventing pollution from entering our waterways. Stormwater capture is an important #OneWater strategy, solving multiple water challenges simultaneously. Even better, when incorporating green infrastructure, stormwater capture can provide multiple benefits to communities, including green space, urban cooling, and more. Wetlands are critical infrastructure for filtering and cleaning our water, protecting communities from flooding, and supporting vibrant ecosystems. One year ago, the Supreme Court issued a ruling on Sackett v. EPA that substantially weakened the Clean Water Act, removing protections for 60% of US wetlands and critical waters nationwide. In the year since, partners at the Clean Water for All Coalition and beyond have worked at the local, state, and federal levels to ensure that our waters are protected now and for future generations. Local water champions are essential for ensuring water policy meets the needs of people and nature. This week, Sarah Diringer, PhD, Pisces Foundation Program Officer for Water & Climate, is moderating a plenary panel at #RiverRally24 on the importance of local leaders in driving equitable water policy at all levels - local, state, regional, and federal. Our president David Beckman reflects on the Council on Foundations #buildingtogether24 conference. I am flying back from Chicago, where I attended an innovative conference sponsored by Council on Foundations, called #BuildingTogether. The meeting explored how to address toxic polarization at a moment when it is on the rise. Powerfully, I thought, the conference (which our partner, Mosaic, helped sponsor) focused on more than just skills and academics. Rather, it helped diverse attendees “develop the heartset, mindset, and skillset to lead collaboratively across difference.” Bridging difference, which is a component of effective #movement building, has to be approached with integrity and authenticity. It can’t occur if those engaged don’t fundamentally agree on the each other’s shared humanity, as The Greater Good Science Center emphasized. But the possibilities are significant when done well, with an open heart, mind, and the skills to engage with those who see things differently. This was the lesson of a panel on building a more powerful #climate movement I moderated with an exceptional group of leaders, Jacqueline Patterson, Susan Hendershot, Ariana Gonzalez, and Katie Robinson, who bring a range of skills and perspectives to the work. Without exception, they shared stories where bridging efforts generated impact and results by finding important zones of common ground, ranging from broad coalitions that helped ensure passage of the #IRA, to various new #environmental policies, to the expansion of efforts to advance #environmentaljustice in communities across the country. Katie Robinson, Mosaic’s director, said it well in the opening plenary in describing the bridging work that Mosaic’s Governance Assembly accomplished in recent years in making nearly $30 million in grants to build the shared capacity of environmental advocates. About this group, who are in many ways a fractal of the broader #climate movement, Katie said, “over the past several years these leaders have done the hard work to build the trust necessary to advance our collective capacity to solve climate challenges. They have moved from wariness to relationship.” I would add that this means they, and the groups they lead, share something that is both powerful and rare: each other’s insight. Given the pace and scale of the challenges we all face, that is no small thing.
