This morning, I had the chance to attend Innovate Charlotte's "Intro to the Charlotte Startup Ecosystem" event. Even after living in Charlotte for almost 20 years, I had no idea how much the Queen City has to offer. If you’re exploring the startup scene in Charlotte, you’ll find a vibrant and supportive community with a wealth of resources. Here are some of the great resources to explore (in no particular order): 1. PitchBreakfast: A monthly gathering where entrepreneurs present their ideas to a panel of investors. It's an invaluable opportunity to get feedback and meet others in the community. 2. LaunchCLT: A program that provides mentorship by connecting you with experienced professionals who can guide your startup journey. 3. NC IDEA Grants: Offering up to $50K twice a year, these grants can help fund your business without requiring you to give up equity. 4. gBETA Charlotte: Designed to prepare startups for raising capital, this program connects you with crucial resources and networks. 5. Founders & Funders Happy Hours: A casual networking event where entrepreneurs and investors can mix and mingle. 6. Venture 135 Conference: A major event in Charlotte for connecting with investors, particularly in the fintech space. 7. NC TECH: A statewide organization that hosts regular events, including in Charlotte, focused on tech and innovation. 8. Charlotte Venture Challenge: A competition and support program for early-stage companies, offering guidance and funding opportunities. 9. CreativeMornings: A monthly event that brings together Charlotte’s creative community for inspiration and networking. Some of the great things about Charlotte 1. We have a diverse array of support systems: Whether you're a solopreneur or leading an innovative tech company, there’s tailored support for everyone. 2. There's a great, engaged community: Regular events like Founders & Funders Happy Hours and 1 Million Cups foster connections and keep the community dynamic. 3. There are a lot of great funding opportunities: Charlotte is home to an increasing number of funding options, from grants to local angel investors and venture capital. Juan’s own journey is inspiring—having tried to launch a “LendingTree for mobile homes” while studying at Johnson & Wales, only to pivot after the 2008 financial crisis. His experience drives his passion for helping other entrepreneurs succeed by connecting them with the resources they need.
