Healthcare systems worried about cybersecurity would do well to remember that the Death Star was destroyed through a single, unprotected thermal exhaust port. Now, imagine the number of equivalent weaknesses in the average healthcare system. Attackers don’t need the Force on their side to wreak havoc, as evidenced by the Change Healthcare disaster and dozens of other examples. A recent article in Healthcare IT Today detailed the most common threats to healthcare security, including social engineering, human error, legacy solutions and poor maintenance, unsecured mobile devices and more. Our experts at Pivot Point Consulting take a proactive approach to cybersecurity. We can identify and plug weaknesses as part of a comprehensive cybersecurity defense, including knowledge of security standards, such as PHI, PII and SOX. We also advise leaders on the cost-benefit tradeoffs in data security investments, ensuring your system is prepared for any potential threats. https://lnkd.in/em7jYgTv I #Cybersecurity #HealthTech #HealthcareHacking #HealthcareData

Healthcare system CEOs have spent the past 4 years dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, workforce shortages, revenue shortfalls and digital transformation. So, what’s next? 4 CEOs explain what they expect in the coming years in a series of “Becker's Healthcare Podcasts.” “It is very important for us to understand that we can’t expect the world to go back to the way it was in 2019,” Joon S Lee MD, CEO of Atlanta-based Emory Healthcare, says in one episode. Lee and the other leaders discuss technology, resilience and the growing necessity of partnerships to ensure success. https://lnkd.in/g2WEYAhg I #Hospitals #HospitalManagement #HealthcareSystems #DigitalTransformation

According to a report from independent research firm KLAS Research, large healthcare systems bought most of the acute care EHRs in 2023, with Epic as the provider of choice. Of 319 hospitals that bought acute care EHRs last year, 79% were part of health systems, while the rest were independent. Among the factors driving purchasing were acquisitions, a desire to streamline IT departments, and improving EHR usability. Epic was the only vendor to see a net increase in market share in 2023, while rival Oracle Health experienced its most significant net hospital loss on record. https://lnkd.in/gBQkm4AR I #HealthTech #EHR #Epic #HealthIT

A new study from the National Bureau of Economic Research finds that higher healthcare costs caused by hospital mergers can cause local employers to lay off workers. The report found that: ▶ A 1% increase in healthcare prices shrunk the payroll and employment of nearby non-healthcare employers by about 0.4%, with those employers cutting workers rather than reducing wages. ▶ County-level decreases in income and increases in unemployment from that 1% healthcare cost hike led to losses for the federal government in the form of 2.5% higher unemployment insurance payments and a 0.4% reduction in federal income tax revenue collection. https://lnkd.in/gvkgtZ4m I #Healthcare #HealthcareMA #HealthcareSystems #HospitalMergers Fierce Healthcare

Healthcare systems are increasingly automating their revenue cycle management, but are there aspects of it still requiring a human touch? Yes, according to a recent story in HealthLeaders. A survey found that 78% of hospitals and healthcare systems either use or are in the process of implementing automation in their RCM. Chief financial officers and revenue cycle leaders quoted in the article said automation is an opportunity to further train staff or shift them to other areas but added that it’s important that patients still be able to talk to revenue cycle staff. The experts at Pivot Point Consulting can help health systems automate and refine their revenue cycle operations by creating processes that maximize revenue, improve financial processes, and deliver an exceptional patient financial experience. https://lnkd.in/gmkwt5fB I #RCM #HospitalRevenues #HealthIT #HealthTech

“The Department of Health and Human Services’ crackdown on information blocking by healthcare providers is a welcome step toward data interoperability,” said Zack Tisch, PMP, Senior VP for Healthcare Services at Pivot Point Consulting. Tisch was one of several leaders interviewed by Healthcare IT News for reaction to the HHS codifying financial disincentives to be leveled against providers who commit information blocking. "By policing information-blocking more rigorously and with full transparency," Tisch said, the hope is to "advance the overarching objectives of the 21st Century Cures Act – promoting a healthcare ecosystem where data flows freely and securely to support patient-centered care and innovation." Hurricane warnings usually come from the National Weather Service, but this year it’s another federal agency, the FDA, alerting hospitals and healthcare systems to prepare for rough weather. Healthcare providers should be ready for supply chain disruptions during what is predicted to be an active hurricane season from June through November. The agency recommends stockpiling materials, identifying alternative sources for supplies and preparing conservation measures, among other things. Our sister company, Plantensive, builds, implements and optimizes dynamic and reliable supply chain solutions that help organizations adapt to business challenges, including weather disruptions. https://lnkd.in/gTNPyzuw #Hospitals #SupplyChain #HealthIT #HealthTech Healthcare Finance News

Hospitals are outpacing physicians in healthcare data exchange, according to a new report from Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC). The study tracked the ability of hospitals and physicians to electronically find, send, receive and integrate patient health information—the 4 domains of interoperability. It found that in 2023, 70% of hospitals reported “sometimes” or “often” engaging in all 4 domains, compared to just 23% in 2014. By comparison, less than 20% of physicians engaged in all 4 domains by 2021. The ONC acknowledged the progress but called for continued improvement. It announced that future data analysis will focus on routine interoperability as the benchmark for success. Pivot Point Consulting helps hospital systems achieve broader data exchange through initiatives supporting health information exchanges, research and federal/state reporting. https://lnkd.in/gi3pwxAk I #EHR #HealthcareData #DataInteroperability #HealthTech #ONC #HealthData HIT Consultant Media
