PolySource paid a visit to a client's injection molding division. We spotted some cosmetic defects in parts made from Long Glass Fiber (LGF) Polypropylene. So, we put on our FIXER hats, ran some tests, and provided a diagnosis. Not only did our prescription treat the problem, but it also saved our client a pretty penny. Just another day in the life as a FIXER! Next up on our "Where in the World?" series, Indiana! Chad Miller, PolySource Technical Sales Account Manager, was in the driver's seat as he headed to The Indy 500 race. Chad took a few minutes to talk pellets in the pit. Highlights included great networking and up close experience with the cars. He got to see firsthand how strong plastic and carbon fiber can be while still remaining lightweight. #PolySource #TheFixers #PlasticsIndustry #networking #plastics #indy500 #Indianapolis #Indiana

An other happy customer. 4 weeks from time to place the order to delivery first sample prototype. One of the benefits to work with MT-molding is that we build tooling in house. Full control of the supply chain. BOOM made in the USA.

As we head into the summer vacay months, PolySource wants to share where the Fixers' travels have taken them in our new "Where in the World?" series. First stop, Louisiana! PolySource's very own Jeremy Bland and Grant John attended the Bennett's Story Car Show fundraiser, where PolySource was a top tier sponsor. As Grant put it, "This is much more than selling pellets and solving plastic problems. These are lifelong friendships." PolySource has a new face around the office! In order to better serve our customers, we've added Hannah Kelso to our Order Management Leader team! Let's get to know Hannah! Originally from Southeast Nebraska, Hannah graduated from the University of Southern California. With a background in systems support, customer service, and logistics, she's an excellent added resource to our operational teams. Hannah also has extensive experience in building relationships in education and as a social worker for children and families. Outside of the office, Hannah answers to the titles of wife, tenured dog mom, and rookie regular mom. She enjoys traveling, cooking, eating at new restaurants, music performances, and chasing her dogs and daughter around. Fun fact about Hannah: she has played trombone for Cheech and Chong, which is ultimately what secured her position at PolySource. Welcome, Hannah! #PolySource #TheFixers #EmployeeSpotlight #PlasticsIndustry #NewEmployee #BestPlacesToWork

Water Bottle Material Analysis Several weeks ago I was at NPE, a fantastic experience for learning more about plastics, and networking with old friends and colleagues. One of the events of the week included a reception sponsored by PolySource. Thanks to Cliff Watkins and the other “Fixers” for the invitation. At that reception, PolySource was giving away YETI water bottles. Over a beer and some delicious appetizers, my colleagues from The Madison Group | Plastic Consulting and I pondered what plastics were used to manufacture the water bottle – both the jar and the cap. There is no shame in being a plastics geek. Well, once I got back, I acted on that curiosity and analyzed the two parts. I started with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) using our Thermo Fisher Scientific Nicolet iS5 spectrometer, and followed that up with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) on our TA Instruments Discovery DSC 2500. The Jar The FTIR analysis of the jar material produced a spectrum characteristic of a thermoplastic polyester, consistent with poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET), or a PET copolymer - commonly referred to as a copolyester. Since these polymers have generally similar structure, their FTIR spectra are difficult to positively differentiate. The DSC testing, however, clearly showed a glass transition temperature (Tg) of 109 °C. This was too high for PET, and was within the expected range for a copolyester resin. The Cap The cap material produced an FTIR spectrum that was characteristic of a polypropylene resin. However, polypropylene homopolymer and the various copolymers cannot be distinguished spectrally, and their melting characteristics are used for further identification. The FTIR spectrum also showed the cap material contained an apparently high level of talc filler. The DSC analysis of the cap material showed two distinct melting transitions: a primary melting point at 166 °C associated with propylene functionality, and a secondary at 123 °C corresponding to ethylene functionality. These results were indicative of a polypropylene block copolymer. The results from the composition testing were not unexpected, as the identified materials are commonly used in these types of applications. The combination of FTIR and DSC can provide a great start toward identifying polymeric materials.
