🌱 PxD’s Director of Research, Tomoko Harigaya’s recent visit to farmers in West Bengal! 🌱 Sharing some photos from PxD’s Director of Research, Tomoko Harigaya’s recent visit to some of our farmers in West Bengal. PxD is exploring a scalable model of distributing free trial packets of flood-tolerant seeds (Swarna Sub1, SS1) to rice farmers (and agro-dealers) to accelerate SS1 adoption. 🌧️💡 🌿 On the left, this farmer has not experienced submergence—both SS1 on the left and the local variety on the right are doing well. On the right, this plot was submerged underwater for ~18 days. The local variety (right plot) has been completely damaged, while the sub1 variety (left plot) has survived.  🌾If you look at the zoomed-in photo, you can see that the roots of the local variety are rotten. It’s exciting to see some diffusion happening organically! Some farmers have shared the trial seeds with others in the community to try out this season; one farmer told us that he shared the trial seeds with a local agro dealer who is also a farmer. In sub-Saharan Africa, it is estimated that three-quarters of families are unable to use the internet to access educational materials, and access is even more limited in rural areas. Creating tools that connect to more widely available technology could reduce inequality in access to digital learning and educational outcomes. Research in #Kenya suggests that an SMS-based adaptive #mathematics learning tool improved math skills of school-aged children. Children of households without electricity also experienced an increase in test scores, school attendance, and grade attainment. 🌱 We are pleased to announce the publication of a new paper titled "The Impact of an SMS-Based Adaptive Math Learning Tool on Educational Outcomes in Kenya." This research was conducted in collaboration with Innovations for Poverty Action Kenya, Precision Development (PxD), and the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD). 🧑🏾🎓 The study presents findings from two randomized evaluations that assessed the effectiveness of an SMS-based adaptive mathematics learning service. The results appear to demonstrate significant improvements in the math skills, school attendance, and grade attainment of students, particularly those in households without electricity. 📱 This important research highlights the potential of mobile technology to enhance educational outcomes in resource-limited settings.
