    If you’re building a software product and are struggling to get it launch-ready, this is for you: For non-techie founders and org leaders, launching a software platform can be risky business; many products never make it to market due to execution failures, which prevent you from testing the basic premise of your product. At Goji Labs, we call these ‘Rescue Projects.’ 🆘 What are ‘Rescue Projects’ (and how they got their name): In 2014, Adam Sumner and I were working out of a co-working space in DTLA. We repeatedly met founders with strong business concepts and clear product visions. They *knew* what they wanted to build—but found themselves with a half-baked product and limited resources left to fix it. So, we began taking more and more of them under our consulting portfolio—until, eventually, we got the hint, founded Goji, and lovingly dubbed these “Rescue Projects.” A decade later, and with over $1B raised by our partners, “Rescue Projects” still make up almost 1/3 of our work. Why? Because not only are they meaningful—getting founders and organizations unstuck is remarkably rewarding—but they give our team a chance to tackle interesting and diverse challenges. And with over 50% of software development initiatives facing these issues, it’s frankly a great business opportunity… Over time, we developed a clear methodology for Rescue Projects, regardless of which point in the product development lifecycle you might be stuck in. 🦸♂️ The ‘Rescue’ Process 1. EMPATHY: Building a product well is challenging, and a common reason for project failure is a bad fit between founders and a development team. It’s important to remember (and we’ll remind you) that poor execution is often just that—and not an indication of a bad concept. 2. EVALUATION: Fully audit the business, product, and work delivered so far. What *are* your business objectives, what is the solution, and who is it for? How do we create alignment between the business goals and your customer goals? From there, we’ll review all the assets you might already have—specs, designs, code—and see if there’s anything to salvage. If there is, we’ll use it to make our process more efficient. 3. RE-BOOT: Once we re-establish where you want to go and formulate an approach for getting there, we’ll leverage our best-in-class product development methodology to get the platform to market. TLDR; Yes—development derailments do happen. But there’s always a way to fix the situation.
