It’s devastating to recognize that pregnancy does not always end with a healthy mom and baby coming home in the modern age. The fact that women and babies still die during pregnancy and childbirth can be overwhelming. Having a friend or family member who experienced loss during an unexpected, severe case of preeclampsia and/or HELLP syndrome may be the first time that you have personally experienced infant death. Preeclampsia and other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy affect both the mother and the baby’s well-being. Your loved one may be facing medical recovery of her own on top of the emotions of a pregnancy or infant loss. She may have also come very near losing her life as well. It’s important that you ask what you can do to assist in a way that reflects what your loved ones need. Please see our article on how to “show up for a preeclampsia mom" for unique tips on how to be there for her. For today's #StorySunday we are sharing Supreet's story with #preeclampsia #hellpsyndrome #infantloss Supreet writes, "My husband and I always knew we would eventually want kids but were in no real rush but when we found ourselves expecting our first baby, we were thrilled and felt grateful. When we found out the baby was going to be a girl, we decided to name her Noor, which means light. I had always been obsessed with lighthouses and my husband even proposed to me at one, so we knew it was the perfect name for our daughter. My entire pregnancy I was told I was healthy and my baby girl was healthy. I never had any symptoms other than swelling which was always deemed as a normal side effect of pregnancy. On January 22,2024 at 40 weeks and 2 days I went into labor. During active labor the doctors discovered my platelets had dropped so low. I was told I should have at least 150 and I had 63. They did a transfusion but every time I had contractions, my baby's heart rate would drop. They rushed me into an emergency c section but my daughter was born without a heart beat. They tried CPR but too much damage had been done to her organs. She died the next day. I was later told I had atypical pre eclampsia/HELLP syndrome where I displayed no "real" and "serious signs" so they never suspected anything. Meanwhile my whole 3rd trimester my platelets were dropping and my daughter was struggling but no one ever knew. We will grieve our daughter for the rest of our lives. But I want to always emphasize to every expecting mother how important it is to demand blood work throughout your entire pregnancy whether you are healthy or high risk." For today's #StorySaturday we are sharing Porsche's story with #preeclampsia #chronichypertension #csection Porsche is also one of our #Take10 partners. Porsche writes, " I made it through my first pregnancy and birth in 2017 with no issues and was sure preeclampsia had skipped me. Both my mother and grandmother faced preeclampsia with their first pregnancies and unfortunately granny experienced a loss. When I discovered my second pregnancy I was determined to have a homebirth but thanks to a recent chronic hypertension diagnosis it didn't work out. As a connected birth worker in Philly I sought care from a trusted Certified Nurse Midwife who I had worked with in the past and absolutely love. I remember running into her arms at our first prenatal appointment in tears, concerned for my new baby and still grieving from the trauma of my first birth journey. She lovingly held me and we worked as a team to monitor trends and address a few BP scares throughout my pregnancy. At the close of my 39 week appointment she took a BP reading (as we always did) and it was terribly high. She encouraged me to go to the hospital as this reading solidified what trends from frequent screening was pointing to... preeclampsia was my reality. I was facing another unplanned induction and baby the tears were flowing. I knew it was necessary but it sucked that there were no other options to achieve a vaginal birth. I had great love and support from hubby, my Doula, and local birth workers (who I call family) so we went for it. Early methods went well and my body responded beautifully. But with continuous heart rate dips I eventually made the call for a cesarean, hand picked my surgical team, prayed, and prepared for the OR. The cesarean was successful and we were both well. My body responded well to medication and soon after birth BP readings became favorable (for my norm). I am still battling hypertension today but it's well controlled with medication. I stand as a blessed third generation preeclampsia survivor. I stand grateful for no major complications. I stand joyful over the diligence and care of my amazing midwife who ensured I was heard and literally saved my life." #BirthTrauma is real, but it doesn’t have to define you. The good news is that there are wonderful healthcare providers, peer support groups, and research-tested ways to help process your traumatic experience. Our most important advice? Seek help. Some ways to cope with the trauma could be asking your provider for a summary form to briefly share what happened, seeking mental health support from a trauma informed provider, and journaling. Another resource is the HRSA Maternal Mental Health hotline. You are NOT alone. There is support. #WhyIWalk with Eulonda Whitmore walk chair of the virtual Detroit Michigan Promise Walk for Preeclampsia. Eulonda writes, "With my first and only pregnancy, I found myself sent to Labor and Delivery at 18 weeks because of significant high blood pressure and protein in my urine. It was a scary moment as my pregnancy had become a battle where I was fighting for my life and my daughter's life. Due to severe preeclampsia and the HELLP syndrome, delivered at 20 weeks. My first and only child, my daughter, Yalon Elise Isaac was stillborn. I walk to help other families impacted by preeclampsia and it gives me a feeling that I am supporting my daughter. I walk in my memory of Yalon Elise Isaac who left footprints upon my heart." The Preeclampsia Patient Bill of Rights can help guide patients on what they should expect from their care. It is also a guide on providers on how they should care for preeclampsia, eclampsia and HELLP syndrome patients. Our Foundation works hand-in-hand with state perinatal quality collaboratives as well as national groups like the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) on how to implement training and protocols through “bundles” to improve care. The care for preeclampsia, eclampsia and HELLP syndrome patients has come a long way, BUT there is so much that still needs to happen to ensure ALL patients are treated this way. We are continually educating providers through our many different programs to solve this. ALL patients should have: -Blood pressure taken consistently & accurately -Treatment of severe high blood pressure within 1 hour -Be informed about care decisions We know that many of those in our community did not receive care as stated in the Preeclampsia Patient’s Bill of Rights, and our hearts go out to you if this is your experience. What would you have liked to seen in your care during your experience? What was good about the care you received? Tell us about it in the comments below! “It felt as if my body had failed me and my baby. I was robbed of what should have been an amazing experience.” is a common thought among those who experience birth trauma due to preeclampsia, HELLP syndrome or eclampsia in their pregnancy or postpartum. You are not alone if you felt this way, but we have an important message for you: YOU DID NOTHING WRONG. ♥️ Almost half of all preeclampsia survivors felt major mental and emotional distress following their experience. You are not alone if you have experienced birth trauma.
