John Groover did not hesitate. One night last August, John, Maintenance of Traffic Supervisor for Preferred Materials Asphalt, was on a paving job with his crew in Orlando when he heard the telltale sound of a car hitting safety cones. These safety cones were in place to close the lane and keep him and his coworkers safe while they were paving. John saw something, and he stopped and did something. He sprang into action and maneuvered his truck in front of the intoxicated driver, preventing the speeding vehicle from colliding with the crew. There is no doubt that his actions saved lives that night. John’s act of heroism was recognized at a safety briefing yesterday as the Orlando crews gathered to kick off the second half of the year. The tone in the room was a testament to John’s courage as participants applauded with resounding gratitude and respect. John was awarded Liberty Mutual’s Lifesaver award: a distinction awarded to 20 recipients per year, out of a customer base of over 700,000. John’s family attended the presentation, and his sons witnessed firsthand the tremendous impact their father’s actions had on his coworkers. Everyone was reminded of the many reasons behind why we pledge to put safety first. This prestigious award was the perfect culmination as it followed many other awards to members of our crews who also demonstrate a commitment to safety and lead by example.
