Journalism is in crisis. Newspaper revenues have been falling while fake news is on the rise. Fake news is free while legitimate news is often behind a paywall. Fake news has a potential for exponential growth due to a low cost of entry. This proliferation makes the jobs of journalists more difficult. They have to spend more time not only debunking false statements, but also facing the societal impact of fake news, which includes harassment; bodily harm; a further loss in quality investigative journalism; a continued erosion in public trust and literacy; a breakdown in democratic institutions; and global threats to human health and life via pandemics, pollution and climate change. We are building a free and open source web platform to help journalists detect and fact-check false claims more automatically and at scale. We aim to significantly reduce the amount of time spent on fact-checking by journalists, allowing them to fact-check more claims in less time and with less pressure.
