Prism Health North Texas' mission is to promote the health equity of communities we serve through education, prevention, research, and affirming personalized healthcare. Prism Health North Texas opened services in 1986 during the HIV/AIDS crisis in North Texas, through an initial grant by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Formed as AIDS Arms Network out of the Communities Foundation of Texas, PHNTX for the past 35 years has served the critical role of connecting people living with HIV to care and services in the area. PHNTX evolved to be a nationally recognized leader in delivering high-quality HIV and sexual health services, most recently expanding services to address the alarming rise in sexually transmitted infections in Dallas County and North Texas. Roughly 30% of people living with HIV in North Texas receive medical care and support at one of the four health centers. PHNTX is committed to providing healthcare for all North Texans in a non-judgmental and affirming environment. The organization strives to remove the barriers that prevent any individual from accessing quality healthcare. PHNTX stands for health equity, especially for marginalized populations including people living with HIV, LGBTQIA+, and ethnic minorities. Every individual has the right to affordable, accessible health care and the opportunity to attain their highest level of health.

On this day in 1990, congress unanimously passed the Ryan White CARE Act, named after an Indiana teen who became a national poster child for HIV/AIDS in the early days of the pandemic. This groundbreaking legislation aimed to support people living with HIV/AIDS, particularly individuals who lacked health insurance or were considered low-income. It funded various programs to provide essential services and involved those affected in its implementation. The Act, reauthorized several times, remains a vital support for HIV/AIDS treatment. Ryan White's legacy continues to inspire the fight against AIDS and the discrimination surrounding it.

PHNTX CEO Dr. John Carlo spoke with the Dallas Observer about the rising cases of COVID-19. "'It’s a little bit of everything right now,' Carlo told the Observer, adding that viruses like the flu, RSV or the common cold are 'showing pretty high numbers this year' as well." Dr. Carlo recommends that people keep several at-home COVID-19 tests around the home this summer and test even if the symptoms are minor.

SHAG's mission is to help create the foundation to strengthen the experience of STI clinics in Dallas County through meaningful community engagement and representation. Being a member of SHAG will allow you to play a vital role in influencing change in sexual health equity in Dallas, engage with local community members and leaders, and develop professionally.
