Breaking the cycle of hunger

About us

Too many people across Massachusetts are worried about affording enough food. Project Bread works statewide to connect people and communities to programs that meet nutritional needs and alleviate household budgets. Our advocacy is driven by the real-time challenges of people experiencing food insecurity, so we can permanently break the cycle of hunger. - Provide immediate relief to those who are hungry today - Eradicate the systemic causes of hunger From community-based meal programs, to early childhood and school nutrition initiatives, to improved access to farm-to-table and local food resources, we approach hunger as a complex problem with multiple solutions that often work best in combination, and through cooperation and collaboration between communities and organizations.

When school meals are fresh, flavorful, and free, more kids eat, fueling their day. Powered by your support, our team of Chef Educators works directly with school nutrition professionals to develop creative recipes and enhance culinary skills. These hard-working folks serve 857,000 meals a day to Massachusetts children, an incredible feat. Our Chef Educator Ryan Eckles said it best while co-leading a training with Chef Educator Sherry Hughes at Henry J. Robinson Middle School in Lowell last Friday. “There is not a single other job that we have in our society, other than maybe doctors or nurses, that have your type of impact on future generations. Anytime school’s in session, you are responsible for somewhere between 40 and 70 percent of the nutrition that the students get in a week. That means that the kids can't survive without coming here and eating the food.” Learn more about our work feeding kids and how you can get involved in our mission to end child hunger: https://lnkd.in/epcCB3Au

Feeding kids transforms lives. One year ago, Massachusetts made School Meals for All permanent, ensuring students receive the nutrition they need for years to come! Thanks to your support and advocacy, 100,000 more kids are eating school lunch daily, nourished and ready to learn. This means: ✅ More kids eating school meals ✅ Higher quality school meals ✅ Reduced future health costs ✅ Increased food security ✅ Elimination of stigma and school meal debt While our work isn’t done, our shared victory in making #SchoolMealsforAll permanent will secure food for future generations. Earlier this week, Project Bread joined Governor Maura Healey and Congressman Jim McGovern in Westborough to celebrate and raise awareness about the Summer Child Nutrition Program (including #SummerEatsMA and the permanent Summer EBT program) bringing in $70 million in federal funding to support families across Massachusetts throughout the summer. We were joined by officials from USDA, Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, DTA and local officials and community partners.

Yesterday marked a special milestone as we celebrated the 10th anniversary of our #SummerEatsTour with Congressman Jim McGovern ! 🎉 We were excited to visit #SummerEatsMA meal sites in Worcester & Webster to connect families facing food insecurity & spotlight the vital food resources available. 🍉📚 #SummerEatsMA is here all summer long, all across Massachusetts to make sure kids enjoy nutritious meals while having fun in parks, libraries, pools, and beyond! Thank you to our partners USDA and DESE for joining us in celebrating a decade of making a difference!

#DYK? 1 in 4 families with children in Massachusetts face food insecurity. For many kids and teens, summer means no access to school meals. That’s where #SummerEatsMA comes in! This federally-funded nutrition program helps fill the gap by providing free, nutrition meals to children ages 18 and under –because we know that when children have reliable access to food during the summer they can return to school ready to learn and thrive. Help make Summer Eats accessible to all those in need! https://lnkd.in/eQwtwewH

Our team at Project Bread had an incredible week at the National Anti-Hunger Policy Conference with Food Research & Action Center! We joined over 1,000 advocates to push the boundaries of innovation in fighting hunger. From Capitol Hill meetings on the Farm Bill to insightful discussions on food insecurity challenges, every moment was about driving meaningful change. Together with Massachusetts Law Reform Institute, we co-hosted a meet-and-greet where Congressman Jim McGovern and policy experts delved into the Farm Bill's impact on Massachusetts. It was inspiring to see leaders and advocates unite to confront these critical issues head-on. Our leadership also had productive sessions with USDA, CMS advisors, and Congresswoman Ayanna Pressley, emphasizing our commitment to health equity and sustainable anti-hunger policies. These discussions underscored the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to ensure everyone has access to nutritious food.
