from the hearts of our homeless keiki.. Lani hugged her knees to her chest as she sat on the cold, concrete steps of an abandoned building in downtown Honolulu. Her stomach growled, a familiar pain she had grown used to over the months. Today was different, though. She had heard whispers among the other homeless children about a special outreach program called Project Hawai’i, Inc. They said the volunteers would come around with food, clothing, and even kind words. Lani wasn’t sure if she believed it—kindness had become a rare commodity in her world—but a spark of hope flickered inside her. As the morning wore on, Lani kept her eyes on the street. The usual crowd bustled by, paying no attention to her. She tried to make herself invisible, a skill she had honed to avoid trouble. But then, in the distance, she saw a group of smiling people wearing bright shirts with the Project Hawai’i, Inc. logo on them. They were pulling red wagons laden with colorful bags. Lani’s heart raced. She hesitated for a moment, then stood up and edged closer to the street. One of the volunteers, a young woman with a warm smile and a flower tucked behind her ear, noticed her. The woman approached, her eyes full of genuine concern and care. "Hi there," the volunteer said softly. "My name is Magin. Would you like a lunch bag?" Lani nodded, her throat tight with emotion. Magin handed her a bag, and Lani’s eyes widened as she looked inside. There was a fresh sandwich, an apple, a juice box, and even a gift card for a meal for later. It was the best meal she had seen in a long time. Tears welled up in Lani's eyes as she whispered, "Mahalo." Magin knelt down to Lani’s level. "You're welcome, sweetheart. We’re here every week. If you ever need anything, just let me know, okay?" Lani nodded again, clutching the bag to her chest like a treasure. As Magin moved on to help others, Lani found a quiet spot to sit and enjoy her meal. Each bite was a revelation, filling her with warmth and a sense of belonging she hadn’t felt in a long time. As she finished the last of her juice, Lani looked up at the sky. The clouds were beginning to part, and a ray of sunlight broke through, bathing her in a gentle glow. For the first time in ages, Lani allowed herself to believe that maybe, just maybe, there was hope for a brighter future. And it all started with a simple lunch bag from Project Hawai’i, Inc.
