It’s been about 6 years since I completed this YALI Network course on Strengthening Public Sector Service just about the same time I graduated from the YALI Regional Leadership Center - West Africa - Dakar Cohort 4 online. The search for a national Public Health Institution was birthed. After looking within and outside the African continent and based on opportunities provided as well as means to access them my journey so far has been one of been open minded and focused. While some others may call it luck I know it’s grace and favour amidst mistakes and hardwork. On this journey I received and still I’m receiving mentorship as I am trying to give back to the best of my ability. I’d like to dedicate this post in loving memory of my Grand Uncle, Steve Ikem. He saw my frustration trying to raise $5,000 earlier in 2017 and then told me “you know if we had this money we would set you up in Nigeria as you are quite versatile” then he asks me “why not look for a Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention just like the U.S. Department of State CDC?” On this journey I’d meet MUHAMMAD MUHAMMAD SALEH USCDC who is a YALI fellow and mentor me on Public Health Emergency Management, also Oladipupo Ipadeola Ph.D., MPH, FAPH who will mentor me on data and surveillance facilitating my first Lassa fever outbreak response in Taraba to support surveillance. Thanks to the leadership of Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu I would experience firsthand that indeed a public service sector can be strengthened as we will see him walk the talk and change the narrative of public sector service in Nigeria. In 5 years, I would play critical role first as ICT support, then project assistant in the establishment of national and sub-national public health emergency operations centre first of its kind on the continent. Project led by my supervisor turned friend Dr Everistus Aniaku. Training over 3,000 frontline responders across the spectrum of leadership at national and Subnational within and outside Nigeria. This would be culminated with an award of honour going above and beyond to advancing the public health emergency management in Nigeria. I had started off as a data officer supporting national and Subnational onboarding of our bio surveillance tool SORMAS Foundation. Also, as a project assistant working with public health experts that used #Delphi process to determine mpox inclusion in the IDSR working closely with Dr Aruna Sola Public Health England. Before this there wasn’t a standard method on how to include or exclude disease from the IDSR. Then in 2019 I will join Abiodun Egwuenu and Eme Ekeng thanks to Dr Joshua Obasanya to DTU - Technical University of Denmark for #flemingfund #AMR fellowship Mott MacDonald here I would be exposed to whole genome and meta genomic sequencing. On my return while attending a ProMED event inaugurating African moderators, I will meet Linda C. Cohen MacKinnon, MPH, PMP and later become an African AMR moderator for the ProMED-AMR network.
