About us
Every day, 119,000 compassionate caregivers serve patients and communities through Providence St. Joseph Health, a national, Catholic, not-for-profit health system, driven by a belief that health is a human right. Rooted in the founding missions of the Sisters of Providence and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange, courageous women ahead of their time who brought health care and other social services to the American West when it was still a rugged, untamed frontier, we share a singular commitment to improve the health of all. From our earliest days, we’ve met new challenges by pioneering new solutions. Today, with 51 hospitals, 829 clinics and a comprehensive range of services, we strive to meet the needs of communities across Alaska, California, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas and Washington through a diverse family of Catholic, other faith-based and mission-driven secular organizations. Now, as we face a new frontier—a changing health care landscape—we draw upon their pioneering and compassionate spirit to plan for the next century of health for a better world, especially for the poor and vulnerable. If you need treatment, please visit www.providence.org to locate a health care provider.

Earlier this summer, the U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, officially designated firearm violence as a public health crisis. As the Surgeon General points out in the advisory, 48,204 people died from firearm-related injuries in 2022, and exposure to firearm violence can contribute to elevated stress levels and mental health challenges and threaten the sense of well-being for entire communities. Dr. Arpan Waghray, a psychiatrist and CEO of Providence's Well Being Trust, was recently featured in a The Catholic Health Association of the United States article where he spoke about the importance of addressing firearm violence and its impact on both physical and mental health with solid data and research. "The idea that we believe health is a human right and everybody has the right to reach their fullest potential is inherent in what we do every day. We have a moral responsibility to make sure that we are doing more, and I think what we need to be doing is make sure that we're bringing the best science forward to really help people and drive change." -Arpan Waghray , MD Learn more: http://ms.spr.ly/6046ldXgy #ProvidenceCares

AI-driven tools, like MedPearl, can significantly help reduce clinician burnout. By providing clinicians with a real-time, comprehensive knowledge hub, they're empowered to quickly make more informed decisions, which ultimately enhances overall health care delivery. "An example of AI technology at our organization is the MedPearl platform, a clinical intelligence engine specifically designed by and for clinicians. This platform exemplifies our approach to integrating AI into health care settings. MedPearl enhances clinical decision-making by consolidating clinical knowledge, patient data and suggested next best actions at the point of care into a single interface, thereby optimizing clinicians' workflow and reducing the cognitive load." -Eve Cunningham MD MBA, GVP, Chief of Virtual Care and Digital Health Learn more: http://ms.spr.ly/6047lbk8B

At Providence, we’re always looking for innovative ways to improve health care – easing the way for our patients, our clinicians and our communities. Our Co-Caring nursing model brings a virtual nurse onto the care team, helping support administrative tasks, while a bedside nurse provides direct patient care, allowing nurses to work at the top of their licenses. This model is leading to improved patient and caregiver satisfaction, while helping address workforce shortages. Sylvain Trepanier, DNP, RN, CENP, FAONL, FAAN, SVP, chief nursing officer, was one of several leaders to represent Providence at the AHA Leadership Summit last week. We are grateful for Syl's leadership and for sharing the innovative work we're doing through the Co-Caring model. Learn more: http://ms.spr.ly/6040lXaRK #healthcareleaders

What are some challenges around mental health stigma in minority communities, and why is it so important to highlight mental health awareness in these populations? "The ability to get screened for these conditions is difficult, because a lot of these communities are overrepresented in patients who do not have insurance, who have a difficult time getting into the health care system, but even beyond that, there’s the matter of stigma, right? So, for these communities, having a mental health diagnosis carries a lot of stigma, so even when they’re able to get into the health system, there’s this hesitation to get screened for mental health problems. Families may not support the diagnosis or what is needed, because there is a lot of stigma in underrepresented communities around mental health." -Nwando Anyaoku, MD, MPH, MBA, Chief Health Equity Officer and Clinical Innovation Officer Learn more: http://ms.spr.ly/6045lugJz #mentalhealth #minoritymentalhealthmonth #healthequity #BMHW24
