California is one of the most demographically diverse states in the nation, but the demographic breakdown within the state’s ten largest occupations is notably skewed. Insightful new research from Sarah Bohn, Jenny Duan, and Tess Thorman at Public Policy Institute of California examines the patterns that contribute to longstanding earning gaps among California’s workforce. “It is concerning that Latino, Black, and female workers are overrepresented in the lowest-paying of the state’s major jobs and/or underrepresented in the high-paying jobs. While a host of decisions play into the jobs individuals land in, disparate opportunities and barriers in the labor market, in education, and in social support—some of which stem from historical race- and gender-based discrimination—also contribute.” The authors highlight various policy solutions that are critical to expanding opportunity for workers from underrepresented groups, such as raising the minimum wage and expanding paid leave. Philanthropy and the private sector also play a critical role in ensuring economic advancement is possible for every member of California’s diverse workforce. At The James Irvine Foundation, we’re doing our part to make sure underrepresented workers have an active role in efforts to expand quality job prospects in the state. #Workforce #Diversity #QualityJobs https://lnkd.in/dWzDMBFM
