EdTech to empower the next generation of culturally grounded, community serving tech makers + problem solvers

About us

Purple Maiʻa Foundation is a 501(c)(3) technology education nonprofit. We teach coding and computer science through after-school or elective classes to Native Hawaiian students, low-income youth, and others who are underrepresented in tech. As we increase access to tech education and increase students’ earning potential, we also ground students to tech education that their ancestors were indigenous innovators who used their skills and perspective to serve their communities and lands. We support Hawaiian values in contemporary tech culture, and we think that by learning to innovate as indigenous technologies, we can be part of a global shift toward growing more sustainable and just societies.

Do you know who Robert Wilcox is? 👀 On January 7, 1895, the Wilcox Rebellion marked a significant moment in Hawaiian history. Led by Robert William Kalanihiapo Wilcox, a Native Hawaiian and former member of the legislature of the Kingdom of Hawai’i, this armed revolt aimed to restore Queen Liliʻuokalani to the throne after the Hawaiian Kingdom's overthrow. Wilcox and his supporters, determined to reclaim their sovereignty, faced off against the forces of the Republic of Hawai’i near Diamond Head and Waikīkī, achieving victory on the first day. The following day, the Battle of Mōʻiliʻili took place as the struggle continued in Mōʻiliʻili. Despite their bravery, the rebellion was swiftly suppressed, leading to Wilcox's capture and the arrest of Queen Liliʻuokalani. This battle stands as a powerful symbol of the Hawaiian people's enduring spirit and their ongoing struggle to preserve their culture and sovereignty. ✊ 📣 EAHOU Fest 2024 🌀 is happening from September 12-14! Let’s gather, talk story, and connect to the history of this place and the kūpuna who were part of the movement here in Mōʻiliʻili many makahiki ago. We want you to be a part of this transformative 3 day event for just $18.93! 🎟️ Get your tickets now at the link in our bio 🔗 🤔 If you didn’t know this, share this post with your ‘ohana and friends—let’s see if they know it either!
