Decommissioning looks to me like a pure cost, but maybe I'm missing something. Is there a way to bring market forces to the task of plugging? (Besides the possibility of benevolence from the voluntary carbon markets.) Are there barriers to plugging that could be removed by policy? At a higher level, what kinds of policies could we design that would make use of the Porter hypothesis and increase innovation and competitiveness? (https://lnkd.in/gdBvp4dY) Perhaps more importantly. . .Even if ideal policies were created, do most oil companies have the remaining financial strength to meet the obligations? Or do only the shale companies have the remaining wherewithal? There have been a ton of conferences on this subject, but this should be a good one. We’re helping to organize and will be hosting the two days in Houston. (thank you to Energy Conference Network for the chance!) We’ve tried to create a program to give people what they need for the next steps of growth in this prospective new line of business. Cost is steep, but it is cheaper if you register now. Agenda: https://lnkd.in/giHBSgWy Registration: https://lnkd.in/egxhfTzs Amy Spaziani, Dwayne Purvis, P.E., Phillip Price, P.E., Travis Baer, P.E., Nick Gianoutsos, Ted Boettner, Oleg Mikhailov, Brad Handler, Allan Fogwill, Rebecca Aicher, Troy S Bernal, Virginia Palacios, Adam Peltz, Amy Townsend-Small, Randy Pacheco

The must-attend conferences have evolved, but I’ll be at ATCE again this year. It remains the best generalist conference, and this year it offers spotlights on machine learning, hydraulic fracturing and completions, new energy like CCS and geothermal, and even a few topics on sustainability. Plus lots of training courses, four sessions on “the best of” the hydraulic fracturing and drilling conferences, and a ton of receptions by discipline and school. Learn more and register here: https://www.atce.org/ And let me know if you’ll be there. I’d love to catch up. Dwayne Purvis, P.E., TAMU Petroleum, Steve Begg, Ben Nathan

For those of you who postulated how the change in Society of Petroleum Engineers International membership may have been driven by a change in quality of the society, a change in corporate reimbursement, or a change in the political administration. . .This graph expands my previous analysis at https://lnkd.in/gaiW6jbd By comparison to trends in employment and total AAPG membership, it looks like corporate sponsorship may well have driven an inflation of peripheral members. But core (voting) membership of AAPG has fallen just as much as SPE membership, and both are strongly correlated to professional employment as documented by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Of course, every organization has shortcomings. But in my experience, observation, and analysis, the primary driver of membership is not a loss of value. It is a loss of employment related to the changing nature of the work being done and how we are doing it. Clearly, it has no relationship to the political administration in the U.S. Employment dropped precipitously under Trump and stabilized under Biden. To my friends in o&g. . .What do you see as 'energy literacy', and what do you wish people knew? Please answer below! Last week I enjoyed the joint meeting of the Petroleum Engineering Department Heads Association and Society of Petroleum Engineers where a good deal of time was dedicated to outreach and education outside of the industry. In retrospect, though, I realized that I'm not sure there is a consensus on what that is. If we can achieve a functional list, then I'll write a column to explain those ideas. Does energy literacy mean knowledge? Of what? Or does it mean conclusions about the facts? Which conclusions? Please contribute your ideas below. I'm so excited to serve this year as a Distinguished Lecturer for Society of Petroleum Engineers International we will take two short tours in the fall then a whirlwind 10-day international trip next spring to deliver an explanation of "Economic Surprises of Late-Life Production" based on my recent SPE paper and subsequent research. SPE 210226 "Economic Yardsticks for the End of Economic Life: Holdback and Its Adjuncts" https://lnkd.in/gje7wrPh If you want not to be surprised, I encourage you to attend or to reach out to us separately. We're pleased to welcome to the team, Amy Spaziani! Amy has worked as a researcher, explorationist, and development geologist across several states and abroad, including much of her career in California. Today, she uses that knowledge to help Purvis Energy Advisor clients make practical, profitable business decisions based on the fundamental reality of the rock itself. Trained as both a geologist and oceanographer, Amy has worked most of her 15-year career in the oil industry including locations in California and Texas as well as South America and Africa. Besides large and small oil companies, she has also worked for two geologic surveys and the American Geological Institute. She brings a broad base of geologic experience, a broad toolkit of software, and a uniquely conscientious attention to detail. Together with her geologist husband, she offers geologic insights through Spaziani GeoServices, and when time allows she enjoys exploring her new home in the Finger Lakes region of New York with her family. Society of Petroleum Engineers International Membership is down 31%, but half of my friends are gone. This explains how membership increases outside the U.S. and the introduction of new graduates have obscured the "great diaspora" as half of the professionals in the U.S. and most other regions have left the industry. Half of the professionals in SPE in 2015 are now gone. Nearly half of the professionals who have joined since 2015 have also left within three years. My thesis is that today's students are more conscious of long-term career prospects, and that the massive layoffs -- combined with the economic reality of demand plateauing to declining -- makes students and job seekers much less interested in oil and gas. What are your thoughts? Easy to blame public sentiment about the evil nature of oil. But wrong. Data from Gallup shows that sentiment in the U.S. about oil and gas improved even while engagement decreased. https://lnkd.in/gYzn2ijj Plus, professional engagement cut about the same in other regions without the same public distrust or political rhetoric, namely India, China, and Russia.
