At the Quantum Collaborative, we’re big fans of work that makes a real-world impact. Today, we get to celebrate Andreas Spanias’ upcoming sustainable energy research as a 2024-2025 Fulbright Scholar. 🙌 Spanias, a professor of electrical engineering at the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University and the director of ASU-SenSIP, is one of nine ASU faculty selected to conduct research abroad through the US Fulbright program. In this role, Spanias will partner with faculty members at Saints Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, North Macedonia, to improve rooftop solar energy systems using AI and machine learning. His goal is to develop algorithms that can detect system issues and optimize performance by measuring solar irradiance, electrical, and weather data. Additionally, Spanias will be conducting seminars and outreach throughout the Balkans to inspire scientists and university students to continue learning about solar energy systems. Recently, Gil Speyer traveled to Providence, Rhode Island, to present our work on #quantum optimization using Sol – Arizona State University's top-500-ranked supercomputer – at the 1st Workshop on Broadly Accessible Quantum Computing. This workshop, part of #PEARC24, explored how quantum technologies can be integrated into traditional research computing facilities, offering new opportunities and solutions for the broader computing community. Gil’s presentation showcased Quantum Collaborative’s efforts in leveraging quantum optimization, which uses quantum algorithms to solve complex problems more efficiently than can be done with classical approaches, with the broad goal of advancing research and technology. What happens when machine learning meets quantum physics? Look no further than Professor Ying-Cheng Lai's recent research at Arizona State University. For over 30 years, Prof. Lai has explored the mysteries of complex quantum systems. His latest challenge? Mastering the elusive phenomenon of entanglement, where particles remain interconnected regardless of distance—a critical component for #quantum computing and secure communications. By leveraging #machinelearning, Lai’s team is pioneering new methods to control and stabilize entanglement. Their adaptive approach, which learns and evolves in real time, promises to make quantum technologies more practical and reliable. Coming in hot – Our Senior Director of Quantum Networking and research professor Joseph Lukens was just named a 2024 Optica Senior Member! Optica is one of the foremost professional societies for experts in optics and photonics. This is a well-deserved recognition celebrating over 10 years of outstanding contributions to the field. Joe has been a prolific researcher and author, coauthoring over a hundred innovative articles and conference papers – including "Frequency-bin photonic quantum information” published in Optica last year. We’re proud and thankful to have Joe at Quantum Collaborative as an expert and leader in state-of-the-art quantum research programs. Big things are happening at ASU-SenSIP, Arizona State University’s Sensor, Signal, and Information Processing lab! 🙌 In late June, SenSIP held a university-industry summer meeting to discuss the lab's progress and future research directions. The event opened with a seminar by Gennaro De Luca on the potential of generative AI in propelling quantum advantage. Next, Mike Stanley presented a preliminary lab study from Lightsense Technology Inc, sharing how the SenSIP lab’s research can assist in reducing diagnostic times for catheter-associated urinary tract infections – technology that could save thousands of lives each year in the US. The day wrapped up with more progress reports, elevator pitch presentations, and posters from countless students and researchers showcasing the innovative work happening at SenSIP. Last month was full of action for the Quantum Materials Science Working Group – a multi-institution collaboration to advance #quantum computing. We’re proud to share that Arizona State University is well-represented in this group by Torey Battelle, PhD and Douglas Jennewein.   The working group released its first publication, which described areas in materials science research that will likely benefit from combining High-Performance Computing (HPC) and Quantum Computing (QC). The paper appeared in Future Generation Computer Systems! 👏   The team also had their second bi-annual, in-person meeting at IBM’s Almaden Lab in San José, CA, with active participation by Dr. Torey Battelle. In June, the University of Arizona hosted the first-ever Arizona Quantum boot camp – an opportunity for curious college and high school students to dip their toes in #quantum science. Attendees had the chance to ask questions from lecturers Christian Arenz, Ryan Behunin, and Kanu Sinha, as well as meet speakers Alicia Magann, Daniel Soh, Mohamed ElKabbash, Dal Wilson, and Kyle Seyler. ⚛️ We dived deep into the realm of Quantum technology at our Quantum Innovation Day. 💡Our Plug and Play accelerateAZ team and partners Honeywell Aerospace and Raytheon co-hosted this event to hear from entrepreneurs, industry professionals and academic researchers and discuss the opportunities to collaborate together to advance these technologies and train the workforce of the future. Melissa Lamson EVP of Innovation at the Arizona Commerce Authority gave inspiring remarks about the university initiatives and talent pipeline in Arizona. Steve Sanders of unicorn startup Quantinuum gave an enlightening quantum 101 keynote and described the full tech stack of products Quantinuum offers. Startups QuSecure, Ambature , BosonQ Psi (BQP),and PQShield presented their technology for quantum security, sensing, simulation, and advanced materials. The three major Arizona universities joined together on a panel to discuss the role they each are playing to advance quantum research and educational programs for professionals, post-grads and secondary school students. Thanks to Julie Emms, MSEd and Dalziel Wilson of the Univeristy Of Arizona, Gil Speyer of Arizona State University, and Inès Montaño, and Gabriel Montano of Northern Arizona University for participating. One of the most promising applications of quantum computing is the advancement of #materials science. Simply put, the discovery of better, stronger, more efficient materials can revolutionize our world – and #quantum research could help us get there. With this in mind, our own Battelle, PhD and Douglas Jennewein collaborated with IBM and dozens of researchers in a paper titled "Quantum-centric supercomputing for materials science: A perspective on challenges and future directions.” This paper, published in Future Generation Computer Systems, looks at how combining #quantum and traditional supercomputers can solve tough problems in materials science. Key concepts explored in the paper include: ➡Quantum algorithms, or basic programs that help quantum and traditional computers work together ➡Classical processing, which involves using traditional computing to support and improve quantum tasks ➡Hybrid workflows, or managing tasks that use both quantum and traditional computing ➡Materials science use cases, which are real-world examples in materials science that can benefit from quantum computing By working together, researchers are hopeful to find new solutions in materials science through the combined power of quantum and traditional supercomputing – an exciting prospect for the future.
