Our Google Quantum AI team just posted a preprint of some exciting recent results.  Logical qubits are groups of physical qubits used to achieve logical error rates much lower than the underlying physical error rates--this is the key to practical quantum computing.  Using surface codes (square patches of data and measure qubits) with 3, 5, and 7 data qubits on a side, we demonstrated logical error rates that decrease by more than a factor of 2 with each increment in surface code size.  Our logical qubits are a quantum memory, and the team showed that a logical qubit consisting of 101 physical qubits can last 2.4X longer than the lifetime of its best physical qubit.  By continuing to scale surface codes, it should be possible to suppress logical error rates exponentially to the point that large-scale fault tolerant quantum algorithms are feasible.  In fact, when doing experiments with 1-dimensional repetition codes involving up to 29 data qubits, the team found that logical performance is limited by rare correlated error events occurring only about once per hour!

I had a great time at DEF CON 32, where I had the opportunity to talk about quantum hype and quantum readiness from a Global South perspective. I also had a very nice debate with Joan Arrow from Quantum Ethics Project on quantum hype and individual versus collective action. It was also great to learn more about security aspects of quantum computing and quantum communications! I am very thankful to Quantum Village for the invite and for organizing a super interesting event! I am also thankful to Instituto Aaron Swartz for the support. I hope to be able to attend DEF CON again next year, it was a blast!

I should be more active sharing my research.. At the end of last year, I was approched by the Executive Publisher of the Physics Editorial Deparment at Springer and asked to contribute to an open collection on citizen science research in physics.
