Happy Pride Month! 🌈🌈🌈 I am so excited to announce that our article "Launching Queer in Robotics" has been published in the IEEE Robotics & Automation Magazine https://lnkd.in/eV8wZxWJ. This article describes our new organization, Queer in Robotics, which aims to uplift queer roboticists, advocate on behalf of queer people, and build a community among queer roboticists. https://lnkd.in/eUXHVAUF This work would not be possible without my spectacular co-authors and co-organizers Ruchira Ray, Andrea Sipos, Nathan Dennler, Max Parks, Maria Eugenia Cabrera Ubaldi, and Roberto Martín-Martín. Thank you to IEEE Women in Engineering RAS committee for their support in publishing this article and to Queer In AI for helping us to get off the ground and supporting our events and initiatives. I have also had the pleasure of participating in some other awesome Pride-related things in the last few weeks. I was on a panel at the Mastercard NYC Tech Hub with Greg Ulrich, Christopher Wood, and Amol Shah where we discussed how AI is impacting the LGBTQIA+ Community. It was a stimulating conversation about the risks and opportunities for the queer community in this new age of generative AI. I was on a career panel at the Pride in Science Symposium organized by the Out in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (oSTEM) chapter at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai with Brian Daniels, John Gleeson PhD, and Jihan Ryu where we discussed how our career journeys intersected with our queer identities, the lack of senior mentors for queer scientists, and balancing queer parenthood with an academic career path. Finally, in a couple of days, I will be on the TechTank podcast from The Brookings Institution. Arjun Subramonian and I talked about creating queer-inclusive research and experiences in AI with Nicol Turner Lee. These conversations have reinforced my belief in the importance of representation and inclusion in AI and robotics. There are so many opportunities and challenges facing queer people today. We need to harness the potential benefits of AI and robots for queer people while mitigating the risks of harm from these technologies.

✨ I’m still thrilled about my experience from 5 days ago when I presented my work QueerBench: Quantifying Discrimination in Language Models Toward Queer Identities at the Queer In AI workshop at NAACL 2024! 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ My body was a mix of happiness and anxiety as I openly shared my research and was surrounded by incredible queer individuals who have been working in the AI field longer than I have. Despite the nerves, I’m so proud to have completed and presented this work on my own, just in time for pride month! ✊ I’m very grateful for the positive reception my research received, and I hope it will be useful and impactful within the NLP and queer communities. I can’t wait to rethink workflows, explore new models and techniques, and dive back into bias identification in LLMs! Exciting news! 🌟 Come join us for the "Queer Experiences in Industry" panel at NAACL2024. Being queer 🏳️🌈 in AI nowadays is not out of the ordinary. However, it is known and well studied that our experiences within society are affected by our queerness, and this includes how we navigate career-wise. Sometimes how we live our queerness in professional environments can be leveraged by the work we do or the company we work for. Having a safe workspace is always the best case scenario, but it isn’t the norm. The main goal of this panel is to discuss our experiences within industry with the mindset of reaching stakeholders or upper management, and together take some actions on the matter. We are aware there exist other instances that can create an unsafe space (say race, privilege, etc), so we will try to include and discuss them, but with a queer perspective. Our goal is that, by the sharing of these experiences with a diverse audience at @NAACL2024, we can promote safe workspaces for young queer folks looking for a job or currently working in AI. Hey #NLProc folks, Queer in AI is excited to announce a Call for Contributions for our affinity workshop at NAACL 2024! Submissions are due by March 30th. We look forward to accepting general research by queer folks as well as research on queer issues in NLP + linguistics. You can either submit a research paper or submit media (like art, music, tiktoks, videos etc.) The authors of all accepted works will: 1) Have FULL control over how their name appears in public listings of accepted submissions, 2) Have their work showcased by us 3) Be invited to present at the NAACL 2024 conference. The workshop is non-archival. Full papers, work-in-progress papers, works submitted / accepted elsewhere, dual submissions are welcome.
