Our founding team had an awesome time together in Colorado last week in the OCEAN Programs accelerator. We refined our sales strategy, focused our product roadmap, and improved clarity around our unique differentiators in the EdTech market. As we head into this new school year, we're excited about introducing QuestRead to even more young readers. We had a very fun time together working up in the mountains with an amazing group of founders from SMB.co ESGentle PALLI Good Agriculture.
About us
Hi folks! My name is Janessa Ferrell and I'm a former teacher, reading expert, and co-founder of QuestRead. We're building an engaging reading game that increases motivation and achievement for elementary-aged children. The app is under development now and we plan to launch this summer. Our kids spend about 6 hours per day on screens, but more than half of American children aren't reading at grade level! QuestRead offers a fun reading experience that doesn't feel like school, and empowers parents to support their child's reading practice at home. Parents can purchase subscriptions through the App Store, set up their child's account, and then let QuestRead take over. For their child, it's an interactive game where they record themselves reading out loud and get to read a variety of books, based on their interests. Behind the scenes, we're using AI to imitate a reading specialist - assessing fluency, offering adaptive learning, and explicitly teaching reading skills.

It’s been a few years since I was a classroom teacher, but I think I still remember how to do this….👩🏫 When you’re busy building something, it’s tempting to focus all your attention on the thing that you’re building. But when you’re building a product for children, it’s important to actually interact WITH children. I spend time every week asking kids for feedback and ideas, volunteering in schools, and playing games with children. Because, at the end of the day, their opinion is all that really matters. I need to learn from them.

This topic gets me riled up, so I'll try to use my "nice words" here. As if parents didn't have enough on their plate, many of us now need to start teaching our children how to read in the evenings and weekends - AFTER those children have spent the entire day at school. If you've ever attempted to teach a child something in the post-school hours, you'll understand how frustrating that can be. And if you've ever spent an entire day working, cooking and cleaning up dinner, and running kids around to sporting events, you also know that parents don't have time to do this. Why are we in this situation, you might ask? Well, for many years, we elementary teachers were taught to teach reading in a way that was ineffective and harmful to children. We taught them to guess words based on the first letter, context, and pictures. We spent more time creating reading experiences for them, and less time explicitly teaching them how to sound out unfamiliar words. Then to make matters worse, we had a pandemic and children stopped reading altogether. As a start-up founder, a mom of 3, a former elementary teacher, and a reading specialist, this problem keeps me motivated every day. As educators and school leaders, we must do better. As parents, we must demand that our children receive evidence-based reading instruction.
