ICYM: Last week's newsletter covered SpaceX's first in-flight Falcon 9 failure since 2015, sending shockwaves through the industry, as the trusted workhorse is now sidelined to investigate an apparent liquid oxygen leak that shattered the launch vehicle's unprecedented 300+ flight success rate. On a more micro level, 20 Starlink satellites, including 13 equipped with direct-to-device (DTD) payloads, were lost in the July 11 failure. This setback jeopardizes the planned start of Starlink's commercial DTD service, initially set for this fall. Notably, the July 11 Starlink launch had already faced two delays since July 6. Including the recent loss of its 13 DTD satellites, Starlink is only about one-third of the way toward the roughly 300 DTD payloads needed for continuous DTD coverage. Since Jan. 3, 2024, SpaceX has launched a total of 1,088 satellites (972 V2 minis and 116 DTDs), with 48 of those already deorbited or decayed. Considering the launch cadence and production rates of the Starlink V2 Minis and DTD satellites so far in 2024, we were projecting a start of commercial service by November. Now, with Falcon 9 grounded, we estimate Starlink DTD services are likely to be pushed well into Q1 2025. I'm beyond excited to see these amazing fellows finish their degrees, their internships, and to soon enter the space/aerospace workforce. The Patti Grace Smith Fellowship and the Brooke Owens Fellowship are pulling up talent-rich groups that will undoubtedly have a big impact on our industry. Shout outs to my co-leaders Tiffany Russell Lockett, Khristian J., Juanitta Bekoe, and William Pomerantz on making our annual student summit a success, as well as our stellar alumni officers Anisa Hill, D'Ashley Spain, Elijah Simpson, Emily Burrus and Nicholas Olibrice, without whom this event would not have been possible.

Shout out to Caleb Henry for his contributions to the future of the space community! Last week, he attended the Patti Grace Smith Fellowship and Brooke Owens Fellowship Summit in Washington D.C. This four-day event was packed with educational sessions, panels, mentoring, and networking opportunities for students from both fellowships. Caleb had the opportunity to lead a group of 29 college students around the capital and accompany them to NASA Goddard, where they engaged in speed mentoring with employees and had the chance to tour the facility where NASA is building the Nancy Grace Roman telescope. It's inspiring to see the next generation of space professionals being supported and empowered through initiatives like these. #PGSFSummit
