Launching #FishFarmsOut has involved incredible support from NGOs and experts across the world. A huge thanks to The GSFR, Don't Cage Our Oceans, Slow Food, WildFish, Feedback and so many other valued collaborators. A special thanks, too, to Julia Caesar for the opportunity for Rauch president Eva Douzinas to appear on BBC's World Business Report to explain why the United Nations' Food & Agriculture Organisation FAO must clarify its position on "sustainable" aquaculture and stop promoting the farming of salmon, sea bream, sea bass, and other carnivorous fish as a sustainable practice. Not only is carnivorous open net pen fish farming incredibly destructive to the coastlines and habitats where it is sited, it’s also based on the myth of ‘feeding the world.’ We find this to be the most egregious use of greenwashing, when fish are being taken from countries in west Africa to be turned into fish feed for farmed fish in the Mediterranean, where it takes a staggering 1.2 kilos of wild fish needed to produce just 1 kilo of farmed fish. June 7 is World Oceans Day and we are grateful to be part of a worldwide effort to inform the public of the devastating effect of farming salmon, sea bream, sea bass, and other carnivorous fish. It is an unsustainable business model that consumes more wild fish than is produced, yet the industry continues to promote the myth that the so-called blue revolution is "feeding the world." Polluting our waters and coastlines, fish farms decimate communities both where the fish are farmed and where the wild fish are taken for fish meal. As we have learned more and more about the effects of fish farming on coastal communities and marine ecosystems, we have met extraordinary people and groups from around the world that are leading the opposition to this destructive industry, many of whom are listed below. Friday June 7 is World Oceans Day and I am grateful to be part of a worldwide effort to inform the public of the devastating effect of farming salmon, sea bream and sea bass (among other carnivorous fish). It's a fundamentally unsustainable industry that consumes more wild fish than it produces, pollutes our waters and coastlines, and harms communities both where the fish are farmed and where the wild fish are taken for fish meal. I learned of all of this because of the direct threat to my beloved island of Poros which in turn led to the Rauch Foundation learning more and more about this illogical and destructive industry that hides under misleading messaging around "sustainable" aquaculture. Many thanks to the 80+ leaders from more than 50 organizations in 14 countries and 4 continents who attended the first Seas Of Change Summit on Industrial Fish Farming in Poros last week. It was truly inspiring seeing so many come together to share information and brainstorm ideas. We heard from regions around the globe, including Tasmania, Argentina, Norway, Spain, and Scotland, who are mobilizing communities to fight the takeover of their precious coastlines from an industry making an aggressive effort to increase its footprint and create consumer demand. Summit participants called out the EU and UN in particular for the lack of a clear definition of sustainable aquaculture, which allows funding to harmful carnivorous fish farms that consume more wild fish than they produce – in Greece, for instance, where 1.2 kilos of wild fish are needed to produce 1 kilo of farmed carnivorous fish such sea bream and sea bass. And we called in local elected officials to listen to those in Poros and neighboring communities about why they are staunchly opposed to Greece's planned expansion of fish farms throughout the country. Another outstanding day at the #SeasOfChange Poros summit on industrial fish farming. Many thanks to Andrianna Natsoulas of Don't Cage Our Oceans who introduced us via video to two practitioners of values-based aquaculture in Alaska and New Jersey. Thanks too to the folks from ClientEarth Sea Shepherd Global and Blue Marine Foundation , who took us through legislative, legal and coordinated campaigns being used to stop the unregulated growth of the fish farming sector across the globe. The morning’s discussion was followed up with a lively discussion with three mayors from the Saronic region, the Greek Gen Secretaries for Tourism and Ag Policy, and a Member of the EU Parliament for Greece, who listened, took questions, and engaged with residents opposed to industrial scale fish farming taking over their beautiful coastlines. ευχαριστώ to the lovely residents of this most gracious island!
