With more extreme weather and natural disasters on the rise, we want to encourage everyone to make preparing for such events a routine. Here are four steps to help you better prepare for disasters: 1) Stay Informed – Sign up for emergency alerts (https://calalerts.org), along with downloading other helpful apps such as Watch Duty (fire emergencies), MyShake (earthquakes), American Red Cross, FEMA, PulsePoint, “X” formerly known as Twitter and/or other social media platforms to follow your local areas for news updates, etc. 2) Make a Plan – Have an evacuation plan and a designated meeting area. Practice and discuss these plans with your family, roommates, and/or friends. Create a support system of at least four people to check on one another during an emergency. 3) Build a Kit – Build a kit beyond the 3-day supply of food, water, and clothing, to include specific items for your needs (i.e., medications, important documents, hygiene materials, food for animals, tools/equipment [e.g., tools for repairing a wheelchair, hand crank radio, portable charger, flashlight] etc.). 4) Get Involved – Check in with your neighbors, community, and loved ones.
