Statement from Rebuild Local News: "The deal does not require contributions from the other big technology firms, including Meta and Amazon, as #SB1327 did. Having a broader base of support is both fair and would increase the amount of money supporting local journalism jobs in California. SB 1327 would have provided $500 million per year for local newsrooms." #CALeg #California #LocalNews #NewsMedia #Meta #Amazon https://lnkd.in/gJUm56uC

Exciting news! The Knight Foundation launched the Knight Growth Challenge Fund—a $5.4M initiative to help local newsrooms expand into new markets and fight news deserts. A big step towards strengthening access to local news. "In a year that has been marked by layoffs and headlines about our industry’s decline, we’re supporting publishers who are ready to build something that will serve their communities for the long term. And, we hope this fund will create a model for other publishers to learn how to leverage their brands, existing operations, partners and resources into additional ways to address a community’s news needs." Congratulations to the first cohort including The Assembly, Cityside, The Post and Courier, The Salt Lake Tribune, Spotlight PA, and Georges Media Group. Over a third of Oregon’s small-town newspapers have closed, and 68% of its cities have no local news. But, the Fund for Oregon Rural Journalism (FORJ) aims to counter this crisis and bolster local reporting through its Future Journalists of America program, a paid journalism internship for high school students. Executive Director Jody Lawrence-Turner of FORJ said, "Youth learn about the tenets of journalism and journalism literacy... so a new generation of journalists can chip in at small rural newspapers that need help and more students are inspired to consider journalism as a college major."
