Famine levels of hunger are present and likely spreading in #Darfur. The famine finding and our recent interviews with people in Sudan are "a blaring signal that what has been done so far to prevent mass starvation has failed." In our new statement, Daniel P Sullivan outlines steps for an effective famine response. ⬇ https://lnkd.in/d8D8tC3A

Kenya’s relative political stability in a region bedeviled by ongoing conflict has made the country a host for refugees for decades. During this period, Kenya’s refugee policy has evolved from one of encampment towards socio-economic integration of refugees. The successful implementation of Kenya’s new Refugee Act would unlock huge benefits for refugees and their Kenyan-born neighbors alike. But the devil is in the details, and challenges lay ahead on coordinating and implementing the law. Our new report with Kenya National Commission on Human Rights by Abdullahi Boru Halakhe and Samson Omondi details actionable recommendations for the Kenyan government and external actors to guarantee the success of this vital policy. #Kenya #RefugeeAct #PolicyRecommendations https://lnkd.in/e8N8grST

We are pleased to announce our support for the Destination Reception Assistance Act, introduced today by Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), and Representatives Grace Meng (NY-06), Delia Ramirez (IL-03), Adriano Espaillat (NY-13). This forward-looking bill would offer vital #assistance to localities welcoming people seeking #asylum. Read our full statement: https://lnkd.in/debdNgYX

The worrying risk of a #polio outbreak in #Gaza can only be mitigated by a mass vaccination campaign — but this is near impossible for #aid agencies to do without a #ceasefire. Read @JesCMark's full statement on the looming public health crisis in Gaza: https://buff.ly/4bYL25e

Our new #report with The Share Trust and Center for Disaster Philanthropy shows that there is a clear case for shifting more #humanitarian funding in #Ukraine to local organizations. But right now, only 0.07% of funding has gone directly to local actors in the Ukraine response. Read the full report on our website now: https://lnkd.in/g25rmZTi

Our statement from Refugees International on the need to include affected communities in the Board consultations and access modalities of the UN Climate Change Fund for responding to #LossAndDamage. Without direct access to small grants, displaced communities, including refugees and IDPs, will be left behind. On direct access, 350+ civil society orgs are urging the Board to: 1. Establish a small grants window within the Loss and Damage Fund that is directly accessible for communities, local CSOs, Indigenous people, and groups facing marginalization (including refugees and other displaced communities). 2. Ensure that a substantial and progressively growing part of the Fund’s resources is allocated to the small grants window. This will ensure sufficient funds go directly to communities, allow learning by communities & the Fund over time, and improve context-specific responses. 3. Ensure the small grants window has simplified procedures and systems to ensure easy access, transparency and accountability, based on community-led and human rights-based approaches. We’ve heard this repeatedly from affected communities to allow for direct access in practice. To develop a Fund that is fit for purpose and responsive to local contexts, the Board must ensure ongoing communication with affected communities. To be more inclusive and participatory, this should include the following elements: 1. Conduct outreach + communicate with communities through civil society & national governments, in local and accessible language, and support climate education to facilitate meaningful dialogue and engagement with processes. Avoid jargon and processes/forms only in UN languages. 2. Conduct ongoing consultations with civil society in between Board meetings. 3. During Board meetings, allow interventions by civil society representatives throughout Board meetings to foster true dialogue and permit observers to table agenda items as well. 4. Expand observer participation. Support participation by members of groups, such as migrants and displaced people, who are not represented by traditional UNFCCC constituencies. 5. In developing the travel policy, travel support to Board meetings for civil society participants from affected communities must be funded. 6. Travel to meetings cannot be the only way for consultations given the difficulty of many communities to access travel documentation and obtain visas. The Board should work with national governments and CSOs to engage directly with local communities for consultation purposes. With the war in Ukraine in its second year, it is vital to continue shifting humanitarian leadership and resources to local responders. Join us and The Share Trust on July 23 for the launch of our joint report on the issue, “Passing the Buck: The Economics of Localizing Aid in Ukraine.” This joint report was made possible by a grant from the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, as a part of their ongoing efforts to support medium- and long-term solutions for access to basic services in Ukraine. The event will be held in English and Ukrainian, and will be hosted by Ukrainian civil society organization, ISAR "Ednannia".
